Hi,

Has anyone at Linn looked at the new Twonky 5/ Twonky Media Manager?
In it's current incarnation, as opposed to 5beta1, it seems not to support Flac nor "the musictree" layout...
Rendering it useless for the DS's

Am I panicking or missing something?

Beta can be found here , windows only...Sad
Hi AudioKaas

Sorry, I somehow completely misread your post first time and didn't realise that this was a different thing to 5b1.

From what you say [FLAC/tree] it sounds a bit of a step backwards*. I'm downloading the Windows version now; just to see what it does (or maybe doesn't) do. I'll create a [Windows] compilations directory and an Albums directory to see if it has the facility to separate them as per TM4. I'll also switch off the NAS to ensure there are no conflicts with TM4.4.6.

Interesting that they’re incorporating a control point facility into it.

Hi

Well it 'sees' the 'Klimax DS media renderer' in the playlist/config Window and sees the existence of FLAC tracks (just). The Linn GUI can see the server and tracks (see below); Kinsky PDA can even see artwork (well, sort of; see below) and you can actually play tracks on your DS (music even comes out the speakers; always a good sign). On first look at it, the config is very, very basic and thus has a very long way to go.

Below are my observations thus far:

1. It don't see the option for a separate compilations container
2. There isn't a music tree customisation facility
3. It recognises FLAC track titles but no other tags (as below)
4. It doesn't recognise basic Album nor Artist FLAC tags; bad!
5. It does see art when playing the track; some [on Kinsky] were good but most very blurred (TM Windows art is all good, it's some of the art passed to Kinsky which has the problems)
6. I can't check for multi disk sets as it doesn't even recognise artists or albums yet!
7. Couldn't operate KDS nor KK from Windows screen (but who'd want to anyway). Might have got this working if I'd fiddled with it a bit more but it's not worth trying at this stage.

Issues 1 is simply a non starter for me; without that, it's totally useless.
Issue 2 could just be that it's a beta and thus might appear later (I suppose that applies to 1 as well).
Issues 3 and 4 result in all tracks being listed under 'Unknown' (as opposed to being grouped into artists and albums etc); again, could be because it’s a beta but they really should have got at least that bit working!
Issue 5 is just plain odd: one artwork looked great but the rest looked like 10x10 pixels scaled up to 160x160 pixels; weird but I'm surprised it worked at all!
Issue 6 (see 4 & 5).

I’m just giving up at this stage; in its current guise there’s no point looking any further. Okay, it is a beta, but I think that it probably shouldn’t be released in this state of build. Maybe it’s okay for your 'Oh doesn't playing illeagally downloaded MPEG's of Girls Alowed on my PC make me like, so very cool' generation but absolutely nay use for serious applications (and thus us lot) as it stands!

Attached pics show the main operational screen, the config options (well, the lack of them) and the 'advanced' tab (which isn't). Note that I use 'artist - title' format for the title name field of tracks on comp albums as opposed to just 'title' which I use in normal albums; this explains the title format differences in pic 1.

Summary: Best completely forgetting about this for now and we'll watch the forum for updates.

PS Missed a C2H5OH reference, But I'm going for a long tall one right now...Big Grin

Hi Lex

I had to use lots and lots of words cause I'm probably not allowed to simply say 'it's a load of crap' on this forum Big Grin

Seriously though, it looks to me to be pitched at a totally different market and one thus hopes that the media server will be developed in parallel and made available as a stand-alone package; if not, we're up a very famous creek without any form of propulsion.

Off for some nice red C2H5OH myself.
