Hi
I'm looking for a DS GUI that allows you to browse through the album art and then select the album and then the song. Isn't this the most obvious way to search through your music collection, yet I haven't seen any GUI with this function. I've recently ripped all my CDs to a NAS, and found that some albums have been totally buried in the digital cyberspace. If I just could see the album art on the top level in a GUI I could easily find all my albums, but, I haven't seen this yet. Anybody else?
Hi
Kinsky PDA does this now,
see here for screenshots but you have to set Twonky up to deal with your collection correctly to make it work.
For a big collection, you need to set the 'Albums' in Twonky music tree to ABC=1 as you can only show 100 items per virtual container (this is a Twonky defined limit, not a Linn one). With ABC=1 as above, you can have art showing for 100 albums beginning with A, 100 with B, 100 with C etc. You can then browse the albums; it's very good!
To clarify this 100 limitation: if you have only 100 albums, all will show artwork when clicking on albums (with the tree set as normal). If you have a few hundred, set the Album tree ABC to 3 to get ABC, DEF, GHI etc. If you have 1000+ albums, set the ABC=1 as above to separate them into 26 virtual containers (26 alphabetical categories).
This 100 item/container restriction will hopefully be lifted as better servers (or a better Twonky) appear on the market. For now, it's something we have to live.
Bri
Bri,
Thank you for your quick response! I've tried what you described, but I can't get the album art to show at the top level. It works alright in "Now Playing" and as the second level under "Artist". But I can't browse through all my albums in an "Album Art" view so to speak. How is your Twonky set up? I'm probabl doing some basic error here...

KinskyPDA will only display albumart for containers with less than 100 (possibly more now) items in order to maintain responsiveness. Suspect your 'Albums' container has more than 100 entries. To work around this, can set up Twonky to split the albums alphabetically to ensure that any given container has 100 or less items in it
Thanks a lot Bri and rockfather!
Now I understand. My music collection is far too big. If I go down to X, Y and Z it works fine. Too bad that the Twonky limitation hits me.
Thanks again for sorting this out.

Hi
It's a bit of a bummer as I'm up to 99 albums beginning with 'S'. I'm now on a mission to find some really great albums beginning with 'Z' or 'X' as currently, I only have one of each. I suppose I could always change the first letter of some of the S ones to Z; looks the same after enough wine anyway!

Thanks a lot Bri and rockfather!

Just to confirm - KinskyPDA can be run on any Windows Mobile 6 device?

One more question, I don't have a DS (yet) can I install Kinsky PDA and browse files on my NAS to get a feel for the UI?

I'll answer my own question for others! It appears to be a bit hit and miss depending on the device - typical mobiles! Edit: it's alot more hit than miss when you bother to read the instructions!
