I have just returned from Martin-Kleiser in Beaconsfield (01494 681300). The reason for my visit – a “by invitation” listen to the new Klimax Kontrol pre-amplifier.

What is it like? Bearing in mind the position that the existing Kontrol holds at the top of the Linn product range, it would have to be pretty special. Well it is – very special!

Listening to all types of music, from choral to jazz via instrumental and female vocal, it preserves the Pace Rhythm and Timing attributes we know and love and builds on them. Instruments and voices become easier to follow in the mix and locate between the speakers. Instruments or other sounds that you've never been aware of before become obvious. Off-beat drum hits are now deliberate strikes as opposed to just appearing to be sloppy technique. However, this is not just a sledge hammer – there is also sweetness, clarity and delicacy when required.

Externally, the new Kontrol is identical to the existing product (is it really a 7 year old design?). However, internally is where the differences are. I am told that the circuit design has been completely updated and the board architecture has been changed from stereo to dual mono.

Start raiding the savings - the upgrade is retrofittable!
Holy smokes Have much is the upgrade ?
Any details on the upgrade? Can it be done only for a limited period of time? Is there a discount for those who bought the Kontrol within the last year?

Don't know - I'm just a customer. Best thing would be to ring and enquire.

Hi Visoflex,
Have you been able to listen side by side, new versus old? I sometimes wonder that changes occur in existing products because suppliers are not able to supply parts. It would be interesting to hear your comments with regard to the old KK.

Avalon
YES!!!!!!
First Klimax DS and now a better Kontrol, well done Linn Smile
When are the updated Twin/Solos released? Cool

Yes, it was a side by side comparison. In addition to the initial comments, there were some "non-flat earth" attributes, such as better stereo imaging, and additionally, the new amp does not have to be played so hard to get normal listening volume out of it. In a domestic situation, when listening alone, I tend to play it at around 70, which is plenty loud enough. The new amp would be outputting a similar volume at about 60-61.

As to component availability being the upgrade driver, I wouldn't know. I understand that over the current production life of the amplifier, the designer had ideas for improvement. Perhaps now is the right time that all the technical elements have come together, along with Ivor being back in the driving seat - it's just speculation. No doubt there will be opportunities to pose those questions when Linn do the official launch and demonstrations.

As to the upgrade, existing amps will require the circuit boards to be changed, casing and power supply stay. However, this is not a DIY job, a Linn trained technician will require about an hour to do it.

I don't know how long the circuit boards will remain available as an upgrade kit, again, this is something that Linn should be able to answer at formal launch.

I hope this helps.

Think its £1800 for the upgrade if memory serves!
Can this upgrade be done at a dealer? Or have to be sent to linn? Hate to be without a preamp/music for that long Wink
