Hi Oliver

You don't need PuTTY for a Mac as it comes with a built in client for SSH access. You can follow the same procedure as I've outlined, but simply ignore the PuTTY bits and use the Apple utility supplied in the Mac OS. Sorry, I'm not a Mac person and though I've seen it (and used it once) I can't remember how you start it, but I'd expect it'll be pretty obvious (if not, someone here with a Mac will hopefully tell you what it's called and how to start it).

Thanks again Briain,
now I'll go and try my very best!
Though if there is another Mac user who can help, it will be very much appreciated (I really am not that much into computer science - that' why I use Macs!).
Best regards
Oliver

Edit: Looks as if the right program is Terminal. I'll report success or lack of it tonight!

Hi

Yes, that was it (how could I forget such a deterministic name as 'terminal').

Okay, everything is installed as you described it, I am starting my System and...

It works!

Briain, you are a genius. Thanks thanks thanks!

That's great news; glad it was relatively painless! Trust me, I'm certainly no genius (quite the reverse, in fact). I've a radio engineering base (and I experimented with 24/96 wav LP 'rips' through my Linn System back in 2000) but I knew precisely nothing about Twonky and Linux until I bought myself a DS and NAS in 2007. I had to get it to work with my own collection, and having gone through all the pain of working out how to make it fly (well, it was also lots of good fun), I just thought it'd be good to share the information so others could experience control of their music library in the same way that I've been enjoying mine. Dear Briain,
whatever you may deem yourself. The goal of helping others has certainly been achieved with me!
For all Mac users who are as unfamiliar to Terminal as I am. The only difficulty I had was getting onto the NAS. The command line is as follows:
ssh loginname(e.g. Administrator)@192.168.x.x
The NAS should then demand the password for the given loginname and that is it. Then just proceed as Briain describes it in his guidelines.
Best regards
Oliver

Briain, thank you very much for all that you give to this community!

One question. I recall reading somewhere that the custom trees disappear if you restart your Qnap NAS, and that you then had to copy them over again. Is that the case with the latest version?

All the best.

Hi

It was, but the QPKG now fully resolves that issue. Actually, I'll elaborate a little on why this used to happen as it gives an insight into an interesting Qnap feature:

That was originally the case when replacing the trees in the embedded version of Twonky 5 (and was one of the reasons folks like me requested Twonky be made available as a QPKG) but even then, on many Qnap models you could fix it by simply making them executable. The reason why is related to the reason Qnap's take quite a long time to boot (compared to some other NAS's); it actually unpacks and freshly reinstalls many packages at every boot. This makes for a self healing process (which is actually a pretty cool feature, when you think about it) and as the embedded Twonky 5 was included in that process, it was self healing itself by replacing my custom trees with the stock ones at every boot.

QPKG's are entirely different; they are not embedded into the firmware bundle, but are permanently installed onto the main disk partition (beside your music and data 'shares', as opposed to being in with the operating system) and thus the trees will not be touched at boot time. This also explains why you can actually disable Twonky 6 and then enable Twonky 5 (should you wish to) as both are actually installed, but both are in totally different places.

As an interesting side note, I was reading about the security recorder versions of The Qnaps and they actualy store two completely separate firmware images, then reinstall the entire OS at every boot. In addition, they use alternate images at alternate boots, so if one is somehow corrupted, a simple reboot reinstalls the OS from the other; that's the ultimate in self-healing!

Thank you for that answer! I installed the qpkg and your trees just now, following your excellent instructions. Thank you again.

To get full resolution art, what do I choose among the media receivers - Kinsky desktop shows there, but those control points that are not in the list? ANd then, classic media view, advanced or something else? And do I need to rebuild the database again?

Hi

I was just 'extending' my original answer while you were responding Smile

AssetControl, Bubble, Chorus, Kinsky Desktop or Songbook will all send full resolution art, so you can choose any of these five.

'Advanced Media View' is the one with my custom menus (the others are just basic ones to help maintain compatibility for folks who have things other than just Linn)

Doesn't need a database rebuild if you change the view.
