YouTube Audio on the DS - rowlandhills - 2011-06-03 21:07

I keep finding myself listening to music on YouTube. Sometimes for live performances that I can't see anywhere else, sometimes just to check a track out before I buy it, or just to listen to something someone else as mentioned and see if I like it.

Doing exactly this just now, I suddenly thought how nice it would be to playback the audio from a YouTube video on my DS. Is there currently a way to do this?

Would be fab in future to be able to just copy a YouTube URL into a control point and have it come up in the playlist! A suggestion for KinskyDesktop, maybe?

I have to admit that I am not a regular YouTube user but I wonder if I WANT to listen to the sound through my system.
YouTube sounds okay through my tiny PC speakers but I am pretty sure I could not tolerate it on the home system... bleeding ears syndrome anyone?

I did think that, but then I thought how much better MP3 files sound on the DS than through other media players etc.

You could use Audacity and record the audio from youtube. My wife does this if she needs music snippets for use in the classroom.

Not live streaming, but a way to get the music over your DS.

The higher resolution videos (320x240 to 448x336, Flash 7 video @ 900Kbps) offer audio @ 44.1KHz 96Kbps mono. Ouch! I am not going to listen to that on the Linn stereo! Too much pain!
High res video (1280×720 (720p), H.264 video @ 1024Kbps) offers audio @ 44.1KHz 232Kbps stereo. Better. But how many of those videos are out there? And I am not very patient and hate it when the video stops to buffer... I think for the time being the PC speakers are perfect for YouTube ;-)

Now solved. I installed Jamcast ( http://www.sdstechnologies.com/ ) and now have a "virtual soundcard" which I can use to listen on my DS to anything which is playing on my laptop including YouTube etc.

Maybe this is being built-in to the new DSM products.

There is a bracket on the end of your link Rowland that causes it to fail.

I am going to have a play with this, my PC, and my XBOX360 - thanks for the link. See if I can get party mode going.

Rowland, was it easy to set up?

Would be nice if it was...although having just bought a Renew DS, I don't think that I'm going to be able to get DSM anytime soon (well, unless the info we have so far is incorrect, and one could replace both my Renew DS and my Exotik+DA, to offer surround decoding too).

Sorted that link, not sure why the forum decided to include the final bracket in the URL.

If you are watching youtube on an ipad etc, and have an airport express or apple tv, you can have the pictures on the screen and the audio routed to the airport. This in turn can feed out digitally to your DS-I, if you have one. Its clearly not going to be top quality, but at least you get the benefits of decent amplification and speakers.
