I am in a similar position to you decor-wise except maybe more so as it is a dark blue and black 'cinema room'. The wenge and ebony ones are so tempting I've often thought about saying 'to hell with the mismatch' but ultimately no.

Wish I'd been around for one of the 25th anniversary piano black ones. Then again I recall there were some minor QC issues.

Piano black shows every mark and the wood needs to be filled to remove the grain. I'm sure Chris could do it if you wished..................... Why do I think this? Well, I recently received a black dyed Curly Maple which was lacquered to perfection by Chris. I'll post some pictures tomorrow if I get chance. - If he can lacquer like this, then Piano black is probably possible if you ask him nicely!Smile

For me, I don't like Piano black. It shows the dust so badly, cleaning marks and scratches. - The new Rega RP6 is finished in Piano ..... Personally, I wish it wasn't.Tongue

There' a real "wow" factor at first glance, but think of the fingerprints.

Piano black is a factor of lacquered finish if I recall. So doing this to an Ebony plinth would be crazy.

I suspect a more sober, stable wood like maple or walnut may provide the best base for those many, many, many layers pf lacquer which are needed to produce the piano black finish.

Peter, do you recall what the base wood was in the examples you posted above ?

RE: Woodsong Plinths - Chris Dolan - 2012-02-26 23:35

The "Wow factor" from a Chris Harban plinth is almost guaranteed.

When I chose mine there had been a significant delivery of plinths so there were many to choose from and although they were all stunning to be honest you get a bit blasé sometimes ........ then if you are very lucky "the one" appears.

I was fortunate enough to get a virtually simultaneous full eye contact "Wow - that's absolutely gorgeous" from Mrs Dolan - but regrettably she was looking at the plinth first.

Walnut is a bit of a pain as it requires a lot of grain filling to achieve a flat finish. It's also way too good looking to cover in piano black, IMO. Maple would be easier indeed.

I know at least the fluted one is afromosia as it went to a friend of mine. I had my father's tired old fluted afro also redone in piano black and the end result was stunning.

Good call Ricardo, an older Afro would be great ...

I'd still prefer natural afromosia, but my father's wasn't in very good shape (visually only, as it was not warped or anything and it was a corner-braced one) and he always wanted a piano black one (from the day he bought in 1985!). He was very pleased with the result.
