Bamboo flutes have been around for awhile. When will we see a fluted bamboo?

Intended or not, that should be up for the Pun of The Year Awards.

Are there really that many people up here wanting to be bamboozled?

If some want a bamboo plinth for their LP12, why not panda to them?

Wink Because pandas will eat bamboo and so they will the plinth. Sad

Bamboo plinths with your choice of light ridged table or wall mount to match.

Just saying.

Is that really light "ridged" table or did you want a light rigid table. After all if the plinth is to be bamboo fluted isn't a ridged table overdoing it a bit? Wink

It is not uncommon in East Asia to find homes with 1in. thick, 4 - 6in. wide bamboo flooring boards which have a very good reputation of not warping even under severe humidity conditions of between 20% - 90% R.H. They come in natural as well as stained colour and are supposed to be environmentally friendly. Supposedly, these floor boards can be turned into plinths in the right hands ?

Yes, that is the same bamboo. There are many species of bamboo, but many fewer species of timber bamboos that are used for creating bamboo 'wood'. 3 year old stalks are used, often these are 40-60 ft. tall or taller, 4-6" diameter. The culms (rings) are scored with in radial lines up the stalk. When the bamboo is crushed, it breaks on these incisions. The resulting pieces are dried, milled to dimensions near 6-7mm x maybe 15-20mm, and glued/pressed into planks. The results are incredibly strong, stable 'wood'. Bamboo is much more of a renewable resource than almost any wood from a tree. Stalks continue to grow from the same clumps, and very quickly. Actually quickly enough that an old torture technique was to cut a clump of bamboo to the ground cleanly, tie someone to the top of the clump, and water the clump daily with plenty of water. The victim would be grown through in a week or so. Nasty..

Could it be a problem when screws are turned into bamboo. Is there a great risk that the "wood" will break out very easily?

RE: Woodsong Plinths - Chris H - 2012-03-30 18:01

Not likely. Bamboo is very strong. A properly sized hole will hold as good as the best woods.
