Nevermind - rowlandhills - 2011-09-27 20:57

So, anyone tried the 96/24 version of Nevermind from HDTracks yet?

https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?file=catalogdetail&valbum_code=HD00602527805641

I'm really quite tempted, but I'm wary of the "(Remastered)" in the title...

I still won't buy any hd downloads unless they're from the record labels or artists direct, i simply do not trust that they're 100% as good as possible. Am I being unreasonable or too wary? And that's without moaning about the price!

I hope someone downloads this and let's us know seriously soon; I'm getting seriously itchy feet (or even seriously itchy ears) but don't want to be the 'beta listener'. That said, I am very, very tempted! Smile

Bri,

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but you have the 24bit Raising Sand, don't you? Is it worth getting?

A lot are from the labels themselves, and that is where the problem lies.

I've got it too, and IMHO yes, it is worth getting, although if you don't like the mix on the regular version you won't like this either.

Out of 15 down loads I have two which are very bad Ozzy
Talking Heads Remain In Light - Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles The Robots.
It's very evident they have been taken from a DVD-Audio 5.1 mix as the music is all over the place. I have deleted then.
All other high resolution downloads are ( excellent )

My take on HDtracks is they have permission from record companies to sell mixes from DVD-Audio and SACD in high resolution legal down loading.
However the quality control is not what it should be given that Talking Heads Remain In Light - Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles The Robots are not stereo mixes but 5.1 mixes. That said I found their customer service to be very good.

The best sound quality without doubt comes from Linn Music. While there is a lack of main stream music I have found some real gems by having a snap shot listen to lots of albums.

Would be great to see a thread running on the quality of downloads made by posters from HDtracks on a score from 1 to 5 for each album..
This would go some way to stop downloading albums like above which are not stereo mixes.

Great idea! I like the sound of digitonal off linn records, but not enough to part with 18 quid!

RE: Nevermind - rowlandhills - 2011-09-28 13:30

Well, since no-one else has gone for it yet, I've just kicked off the download, although on my "rural" broadband connection, it'll probably take the rest of the day to get it all!

Using the 20% off code "hires20" (valid until midnight on the 30th Sept) I got it for £9.49 (starts at $18, falls to $14.38, which converts to under £9.50) which is only a quid or two more than I'd pay for the CD. Not great, but a pretty acceptable price.
