Moldy Records - wattie - 2012-05-23 17:20

Hello!! Having bought myself a LP12 in January I have since been re-buying my collection on vinyl (once again!).

I've just bought a Mint - Still Sealed - Unplayed copy of Prince's 1987 "Sign 'O' the Times" from Ebay for just 3,50 EUR. Great! But...

It's covered in mould! Sad Questions:-

Will a soon to arrive Okki Nokki RCM save the album or can I throw it in the bin? What about the also moldy OISs ?

The mould was only noticed as the needle clogged up, have I done any damage to the needle? Is it now safe to play other albums? Can I store it with the rest of my collection??

All novice questions, almost embarrassing, but I had to ask! Thanx for any advice!
Now to begin disinfecting the flat! Tongue

Hi

One good plan would be to find someone who has a Keith Monks record cleaning machine; that should sort it. These were principally found in radio stations (back in the golden olden days) but when I used to work at a Linn dealer, we had one in the shop (and it was in near continuous use by our customers). I've no idea how you'd best track one down, these days (maybe ask your local Linn dealer if they know who has one; some private individuals bough them and thus he/she might know who owns one). The KM machine first sprays a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water onto the record, you then apply its big brush to clean it, and the key bit is that it then vacuums the solution (and muck) off the record afterwards. That's the critically important part as not vacuuming it off would leave you with the mould, dust and any other muck to set like concrete on the album; that would not be at all good!!! I've used the KM machine on loads of albums (some in a truly dreadful state) and it really does do the job very, very well!

Bri

PS I immediately thought of this after reading the title of your post:

I remember watching that on Top of the Pops (when it had just been released); I'm showing my age!!!!

Karl, you sound like a fungi, and there are no dumb questions on this Forum.

I was wondering if this record was recorded at Mushroom recording studios. Not all records are recorded in the same mold.

Some of my favorite recordings are from artists such as Sal Monella, E. coli, and Asper Gillus. I used to love the group Clostridium Botulinum, but then they went anaerobic on me. Cam Phylobacter has a new album coming out soon as well.

I prefer to listen to western style music, but sometimes I have a hankering for music from the yeast.

Flagella really knows how to rock. But I am a bit divided on Binary Fusion.

If you have a Waterpik device, you may consider filling it with mild diluted detergent an blast that mould out. Groovy man.

Don't forget to rince after. Floss twice a day for best results

When you have your RCM, Try Audio Intellegent Enzymatic Formula, leave it on for a few minutes, should do the trick.

I have an Okki Nokki, a good RCM is essential in my view for the serious vinyl collector/fan; yes it will clean off the mould, so not one for the bin!

I use an Okki Nokki, but I have found that the use of a Keith Monks brush and 'discovery' fluid give fantastic results over Okki Nokki supplied ones. I do a final rinse with distilled water and achieve records with NO static (it is the Keith Monks fluid that is brilliant at banishing static)
Now, when I receive new vinyl, I will play it once and it there is any static I will give it a 'wash'

Interesting re the Monks stuff, do you have a link where one can purchase it?

I also find the state of some brand new records quite appaling they have to take a trip straight to he Okki!

Hi Gaius,
House of Linn are a Keith Monk supplier- I used them and they were very helpful...FYI the brush is quite expense...but worth it IMHO
