Start of my Linn experience.
I've decided to go Linn, a rather expensive choice if I'm not mistaken. My first thoughts are on Isobarics, any pro's and cons for me to consider?

RE: Start of my Linn experience.
Lee, Welcome to this forum!

Yes Linn components are relatively expensive, but quite good value for money. No surprise you read this opinion here. Wink

A Linn paradigm is: Source first, as no amp or speaker can correct a bad signal.
In case you like vinyl consider a LP12 first. A trusted retailer will have 2nd hand ones.
In case you play digital consider some sort of DS.

Do you consider the "historic" Isobaric or a new Majik Isobaric?

It might help to know the components of your hifi and some informations about your room.

Search for a dealer with good reputation and get his advice too.

RE: Start of my Linn experience.
Good value for money, and there is a good second hand market to support mistakes!

MDSM/2, 6100/D, both draining into large Ikea Aptitligs, bi-aktiv Ninkas(steel bases), K600 and silvers.
Sennheiser HD650's, Aune X7s
Asus AC88U router, Synology 215j(Minimserver), ASUS VivoMini HTPC.
Oppo 105D, Panasonic TC-P50ST60 plasma, VIZIO S4251w-B4 soundbar
Kazoo on Android(s)

RE: Start of my Linn experience.
Hi Lee,

I run Majik Isobariks fully activated and did never regret the choice. Unfortunately Linn will discontinue the Majik Isobariks. So you might look to second hand market. As an alternative the M140 (passive, aktive or via Exaktbox) or the 5-Series (Exakt) can be an option.

My personal view on the Majik Isobarik:
- Take care to tune dem correctly
- Activation is a huge improvement (or connecting them via an Exaktbox)

Cheers
Michael

As you see from my signature, I run the Akubariks in an Exakt system, which is currently the top of the range in isobaric bass systems from Linn, and so can confirm that the isobaric concept works very well. That said, the Majik Isobariks have actually been discontinued for some time (over a year, I think), and will probably be quite difficult to obtain from a reliable source. If you get lucky, they may be the right thing for you.

But the only really sensible advice is for you to go to a Linn dealer (even if it takes time and cost to do so) and listen to what he or she has to offer. Don't fix in advance on a product you haven't heard and may never be able to obtain. The humble Majik 109s (which I had before the Akubariks) are splendid loudspeakers, especially when used in conjunction with a well-configured sub-woofer.

Then again, discussing speakers is putting the cart before the horse. As HH2010 rightly pointed out, you need to be sure that you have the right source components in place before you start looking at amplifiers and speakers. There's no point in using a cheap CD deck as the source for expensive components downstream. What is your current system, and how were you thinking of upgrading?

It’s entirely possible the OP has already sorted things, David. The last post above yours is eighteen months old and Lee hasn’t visited the forum since March ‘16...

Mick

LP12SE * KDS/3 * KK/1/D * Solos/1/D * Akubarik/P
MDSM/3 * Majik 109

Oops. Thanks, Mick. But at least what I said is generally valid for other readers, I believe.
