RE: Easy DS: Blog # 2
Thanks, was half expecting some flames from irate DS owners who'd experienced more grief setting their system up but all quiet on the western front so far...

RE: Easy DS: Blog # 2
Introducing a DS into a functioning home network is as easy as plug and play.
Installing a home network is just as much of a pain whether or not a DS is involved. Sometimes it takes a while to plan a proper flaming.

True, but a 'functioning home network' in this case was simply the bog-standard Sky Broadband router + simple-as-pie homeplugs. Installing either was really not that painful (for me, though I do admit to being a child of the digital generation). I think the RipNAS simplifies things immensely and the gloves may come off when I return my loaner and delve into a cheaper NAS + Twonky combo... |

RE: Easy DS: Blog # 2
this is a very helpful blog thank you
a few questions and a request can you please give the exact model of the Homeplug you used? Also I note that unlike the "official LINN " configeration you do not use internet switches. Any comments ?? are they now superfluous? finally can I place the RIPNAS away from the HIFI and link it with the homeplug or is it better to directly wire it to the DS? Sami |

The exact model used was Devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless G Starter Kit (I checked the Devolo site and they seem to have moved on already and couldn't find this exact model) though I reckon their latest model should be fine. The Linn Docs DS Network Setup guide was/is intended as a recommended guide for anyone looking to install/upgrade a network to a very robust platform for DS. It is still an excellent starting point for many retailers and customers but, in some cases, it is overkill. In my case, I successfully used my broadband router (not BT Homehub, avoid like plague) for a trial system (what is now listed on Docs as a budget system at http://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/DS_Budget_System) and then moved up a level to an additional router (i.e. the Devolo) http://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/DS...vel_System If I ever experience problems like network dropouts then I would consider the full 'separates' listed at http://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/DS...End_System but for now I am happy. (Another alternative router we have found to be quite good is the Zxyel all-in-one -will post link tomorrow.) With regard to RipNAS, I would always recommend using a wired connection between nas and router if possible. The RipNAS is pretty enough to sit next to hi-fi and it is very handy for ripping. EDIT: commas and brackets removed to fix links Zyxel NBG 417N was the all-in-one router/switch/wap |
