Downloads do seem over priced, but then you are getting better than CD for what CDs cost (taking into account of inflation) ten years ago. I do get your point that it feels like you are being ripped off as the seller doesn't have to produce or ship anything. But, how many people buy 24bit downloads? Maybe they need to charge this much as the number of buyers is so low. ...And the number of buyers will remain so low at that prices. i have purchased over 100 masters downloads at eClassical (reasonable price and good quality) and around 10 at Linn records. RE: Music Industry set to embrace Studio Master
Good replies guys, cheers. They've dropped a massive bollock in my opinion. I spoke with james at a linn klimax evening, but he's just so enthusiastic that his company has it right and is going about it the right way.
I could not disagree more. He's a top guy, but not a customer, and the customers vote with their wallets. I don't think he got my point. When they've not increased their sales of studio masters like they predicted, maybe we can say we told you so. So a 24bit album can come in anywhere between 12-28 USD. Althought, to be honest, I can't say if that is reasonable for classical but for popular music it would still be way too much. The more I think about 24bit downloads the more I come to believe it will be nothing more than a niche market for the audiophile and pricing will remain high. I'm even dubious about the mass maket appeal for 16bit Flac downloads. |

Marketing clout? ...... they will still try to make it all sound as loud as possible. Time will tell. [/quote] I was one of them that opted for the convenience of CDs in the 80s. Howver I was not convinced that the AD conversion held all the information. 30 years later, although I am still looking for convenience albeight at higher resolution, I enjoy the sound of vinyl immensely. |

RE: Music Industry set to embrace Studio Master
Let's not forget that its the marketing people that set the price at 'what the market can pay' supposedly after an analyses of markets size and potential sales. Clearly they think that there are enough of us that are willing to pay the premium (again).
There is little use complaining here whilst you're still a customer.............as are many others it seems. I'm just as frustrated as all of you, but as long as this is HI RES (see market hipe) 'it sounds better than normal' (CD), they'll want you to pay extra. The only way they'll notice is voting with you're feet. Regretfully marketing persons are the worst in admitting a mistake, so they'll put it on 'the market hasn't taken off yet' (if you're lucky) or 'this has failed - let's stop this' Regretfully no winners here at all. Cheers, Rene |

There is a happy medium between bargain basement and high end inflated prices. Linn don't understand and don't listen. Jim may be enthusiastic, but that's not selling his artists downloads. What many vinyl lovers don't realise is that since the 80's vinyl cutting has used a 16bit 44.1khz digital delay between the desk output and cutting lathe. The signal needs to be delayed by 900ms for 33rpm and 670ms for 45rpm. Originally an analogue reel to reel tape machine was used to delay the signal. One or two mastering houses will use the reel to reel on special request, but it's very rare indeed. RE: Music Industry set to embrace Studio Master
On the subject of digital downloads, not just 24 bit, I did like the 7digital approach with the King Of Limbs album. It was one price £8.99 and I got to choose the version I wanted (24 bit, 16 bit or mp3 or all 3!). Seems a good idea to me.

Be interesting to hear what percentage of downloads were the 24 bit version. You're right spen, i would hope that approach catches on, but I doubt it. I don't know why linn don't do a three for two on their studio masters. Linn- MajikDS-D, Exotik(a)-D, Lejonklou Tundra stereo power amplifier, lovely maple ninkas. Silvers. K400.
