New look for Now Playing in KinskyDesktop

Kudos to the development team on the new "now playing" /playlist display in KinskyDesktop.

For those that have not found this feature, when you click on the the Linn logo at bottom right side of KD screen it alternates between views. The "now playing" version is full screen with album art, album, song, genre, time into song, total time of song and has the usual three button controls of KD.

In addition you can scroll forward and backwards in the playlist. Each song has a full screen display. Those not playing do not have the times displayed.

I'm running with a 42" Plasma monitor and Logitech Revolution MX mouse on a Vista PC. This mouse has a lot more features than an ordinary mouse, so I'm not sure if all the features work on all systems. The scrolling is what I'm mainly talking about.

Well noticed, the scrolling works on my Lenovo laptop, with the IBM nipple, but it took me a while to realise the scrolling is across the screen - not up and down. This only works with playlists, not with radio presets. This also does not work in the floating "now playing" applet. (If you've not found this double-click on the album/station icon in the KDT header.

I've also just noticed that 3.6.6. selects rooms and sources via dialogs rather than drop down lists, another neat change

Very cool! In the latest KD nightly build, if you right-click in the top or bottom panes, there's a menu item under view to open the Test Playlist, which is just the same as the full screen one Salty found, but in a window (handy on a laptop). You can scroll left and right with it very nicely with a track pad, only one track at a time, but surely some momentum control is due to be implemented so you can scroll through several tracks with a swipe. It will be lovely with a touch screen too.

I have a suggestion for Linn for the main KD window playlist (I found this thread while searching to check it hadn't been suggested already, and perhaps the preference now is to have funkier display functionality going on in this new display, but will post anyway...)

It would be good if, optionally, the main playlist window would keep the currently playing track in view. If the playlist is big and has been playing for some time, then on returning to KD, you need to scroll to locate the currently playing track. I think it would be cool to come back to KD after a few hours playing and find the playlist in this position. Or, change album with the remote, and see that KD has repositioned. Shuffle play is another case where this would be useful. Not suggesting it should do this if the window is resized, or anything too cute, but it would be good to locate the current track in the playlist upon playing it, and perhaps a 'locate current track' button would also be handy.

Hi

Is there some sort of battle going on amongst the developers?
We now have compact mode, now playing, and current playlist apps ..... All broadly similar in scope (though only compact allows control).

Have other testers tried resizing the main KDT window? on my laptop with XP it is a little shaky with different elements of the window resizing at different rates, some faster than the main frame. It all gets there in the end, just doesn't look very smooth. I'm running the latest nightly build.

Hi Chris,

Where are you getting KD 3.6.6. from? I just downloaded the latest nightly build and it is Version 3.3.5.

Just a typo I think, 3.6.6 is the latest Konfig. All the KD features Chris is talking about are in 3.3.5.

Thanks Matt. I thought maybe there was a 'Secret' download page for beta testers. I just checked my Konfig and found I was out of date. Now got 3.6.6 so thanks for the heads up with that.

Yep

Linn's numbering is very confusing for those like me who are short of the little grey cells, It leaves no room for alcohol, and it is easy to get one's knickers in a twist as a result.

3.6.6 (Three.Six.Six) is the version of Cara on my ADS (and also Konfig as Matt correctly suggests).

My KDT is 3.3.5 (Three.Three.Five) Nightly build, as of Friday (I think).

Sorry for the confusion, I will offer penance to the gods....
