DHCP problems

RE: DHCP problems
Thanks, straight after seeing rockfathers reply I've logged a ticket with Draytek (for my own problem).

So how long should a router keep settings for in the event it has no power? (More than 4 hours)?

Should not matter.

Should not loose settings.

I know "maturer" people who go on holiday for 2 weeks and turn everything off, the come back, switch everything on and presto all is back up and running.

The ONLY thing that need to happen is whatever is giving out DHCP is fired up first and allowed to boot before anything else.

But If your router is loosing settings then you are not saving things properly or it is faulty.

It maybe that your Draytek needs a firmware update.

Depending on model, they did go through a period where they they were having problems to the point that I actually stopped using them as they had problems syncing with some ISP's.

As Rockfather states some routers and I think Draytek is one, you may need to save/apply the configuration page you are on and then do an overall apply, older Draytek router don't even have a log out process you just close your browser down which is not good practice really.

RE: DHCP problems
I'll see what Draytek come up with... (Firmware - that is indeed the question I asked, its from Amazon UK, I am in Europe with a state owned ISP).

If not I'll look at Pakedge router + switch solution and keep the ISP router which is the size of a betamax player!

RE: DHCP problems
I just had this problem this evening - power cut, and now I can't see any of 5 DS's until I power them off/on.

I have a Cisco managed switch which does not boot in 5 sec and run DHCP from my DSL router. I don't really care about the technical reasons why this doesn't work, it's just another inconvenience - I bet this doesn't happen with Sonos.

Come on Linn - this really should not require any user intervention - we are only talking about a power cut.

RE: DHCP problems
I wonder why it shouldn't be possible to boot/power up a DS without having a valid IP adress and a backgroud process (dhcp-client) running in parallel waiting until the DS gets a new dhcp lease - like any PC does....

just my 2 cents

This mode is required to permit operation without the need for a network, which is necessary for devices being used as preamps (Kontrol and DS-I models). It makes no sense to increase this delay as it merely increases boot time for 'no ethernet' mode.
Make it a default to 5s but can be set via Konfig for those that want it higher. That makes more sense than the present method.

tx for your quick respone, but that doesn't raelly solve my problem.
my environment:
- when not needed the DS is powered off - standby power consumption is somewhat high)
- the ethernet link is permanently up (powerline adapter)
- dhcp-server and NAS are installed on a linux machine which is not always on, too. Like the DS the linux server must be powered up either manually or by Wake on Lan.

Issue: My 4y old can't boot the linux server, whenever he wants to listen to his CDs. I told him to remove ethernet cable before powering up the DS.

Wouldn't it be great if the DS would come up even if etherlink is up, but without dhcp-server. As soon as the dhcp-server is back online the DS sould automatically retrieve an ip addres. (btw that's how standard IT equipment works). It is not very convenient to re-power and reconnect the DS later the evening, when I want to listen to my music from the NAS

Even my Tvix movie streamer, which cost 1/10th that of a Majik DS, can handle that.

RE: DHCP problems
Hi

To further add to my 1st post, this is still our biggest support issue. The most common router used by customers are the Airport Extreme, which doesn´t boot within the 5s.
What i would like to have is to be able to set the initial delay waiting for ethernet link ( up to 5 minutes ).

Setting a reserved address in the DHCP server as Bumtious writes is not related to this problem.

Best regards / John

RE: DHCP problems
I have the same problem when my Cisco switch boots, it takes a few mins to be operational. I have set the DHCP IP addresses to be the same each time, but this still hasn't resolved the problem. Some kind of timer parameter seems to be the solution.
