Linn DS line should follow iPhone line
I'm listening to my Renew DS right, and earlier on I was listening to my DS-I. I was thinking, there's a big difference in both sources. Even if we take the source only component of the DS-I.
Then I played on my 3GS, and my 4GS. It occurred to me, that rather than make three lines, Majik-Akurate-Klimax, in which prices vary very widely, why doesn't Linn just make one really good source. Every two year, it updates it, and the old Klimax DS (from 2007) let's say, would become the cheaper model (Majik). The Klimax Ds1 would be the (Akurate) and Klimax DSM (Klimax/new top model.) They spend all their R&D money on one model, and make more money. Every 2-3 years they update the models, the previous model becomes the cheaper alternative. Maybe this is a terrible idea. What do you guys think? Only big issue I see is that the Klimax you just bought becomes a mid model in a few years. Maybe they could have upgrades when a new model comes out. The Klimax would be the industry leading source, without argument, as the price could be lowered by a few grand. $15,000? |

RE: Linn DS line should follow iPhone line
Surely we are talking about two different companies and consumers with distinctly different values.
Apple is a fashion label and appeals to consumers who value aesthetics over everything else, and as such, soon want to dispose of their "old" product as it's dated and unfashionable. Linn is less interested in the high volume unit shipments game, and builds products right, the first time, delivering high value products. I prefer this approach as the attention to detail that's required prevents issues like dodgy batteries/antenna etc. I also don't want to replace my hi-fi every 12 months

RE: Linn DS line should follow iPhone line
How about Linn introducing one single streaming unit for about $10,000.00 CAD that is capable of Majik, Akurate and Klimax performance, however.......like apple, your control point would allow you to choose between the three levels at a price per hr, or per album! Ex... Majik =$5.00 per use, Akurate = $10.00 per use and finally , Klimax = $16.00 per use! Less hardware/ more money for linn and more pleasure for users! Just a thought!

I think Porsche should do this, too. Then, next year, I can get a 991 for the price of a Cayman. It will also be interesting to see what their new top-of-the-range car would be like next year (and the year after that, and the year after that ....).
