Just had a CD delivered that promises "24 Super Bit Sound Solution 96 Kilohertz". In magnifying glass small writing.
Now I've had a really close look and whilst the bits appear very nice, I'd be hard pushed to say they were super. I look forward to discovering the CD's resolution and sampling rate although I have a fair inkling. The CD is Copland's Appalachian Spring, so the cover is of what appears to be the North of England in the autumn (brown bracken, fells etc.). Maybe that's what makes the Appalachian Spring so special; the bracken runs in reverse from brown to green. Let's hope that the performance is where the brainpower has gone. Grouch over. I stand to be corrected but i thought you could only get 16 bit on a CD!!!!!

With HDCD (and an appropriate decoder) you can get 20 bits - but the only way to get 96/24 would be as a data file - which would have to be copied to a NAS / media server to play (& would be quite a short album - I'd guess at about 30 min assuming FLAC format).

Indeed 16 bit 44.1KHz is my expectation - fascinated to know how they can claim any of the rest. I do like the ideas of Super bits as well; the very idea is that they are 1 or 0. Or am I opening a "better sounding Cat6 cables" type discussion here?

Quite sure a cd can't play 24bit unless it's a Sacd ?

Rest easy everyone. As suspected, it's a CD. Thanks to an obscure Bulgarian website I think what we have here is a 24 bit, 96KHz remaster which we get at a lower res. Not even HDCD. Still fascinated to know what makes the bits so super!
