Magazine @ Manchester Academy 17th February 2009

F A N T A S T I C !

The last time I saw Magazine was back in 1980 (I think) at Digbeth Town Hall in Birmingham on the Correct Use Of Soap tour.

Even without the wonderful (and sadly missed) John McGeoch they can still deliver the goods big time.

The show was being recorded and filmed and should make a great DVD.

Rachel Podger (a la Palladium Ensemble) and
Gary Cooper with
Ensemble f2

Playing 2 Hadyn symphonies (39 and 44), a piano concerto and a violin concerto.

Wigmore Hall, Wigmore Street, London. Fri 27 Feb 09.

Absolutely fantastic, especially as I haven't seen Rachel play in 5 years. Music only surpassed by the fact she recalled my name after all this time.

And you are right, she looks absolutely stunning, and she plays well too?

RE: My Most Recent Concert
I've had this experience twice now, both with Rachel Podger last night, and with Joe Satriani last year. Haven't heard a favourite musician live for 5 or 11 years. And boy have they massively improved.

At the end of the concert the elderly gentleman sitting next to me said he goes to a lot of concerts and this was the best he had been to in ages.

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band at the Kings Hotel, Melrose, in the Scottish Borders, Feb 2009.

This was the 5th time I have seen SAHB and the 3rd with the new singer (Mad Max Maxwell). The gig was held in a room no bigger than a decent size living room (about 4mtrs x 5mtrs) with an annexe to the side about the same size. There was around 60 squeezed in and the atmosphere was fantastic. Played all the old stuff and proved that 'Vambo still Rools'!

How did they fair without Zal?

SAHB were one of my favourite band's in the 70's. I first saw then supporting YES on the Relayer and was hooked! I mnaged to see then around 6 times with Alex.

If you haven't done so already check out FOURPLAY the album they made without Alex before SAHB STORIES ... a hidden gem of an album!

Hope to catch them in Dudley soon ... if I'm not away on tour!

Julian was very good and is an excellant replacement for Zal. Not the same stage presence (but how could anyone) and kept a low profile during the gig. Dudley should be a blast, and a bank holiday weekend as well. Might take a trip up to Dundee myself!

Cheers, Bil.
