Bass traps have helped my system greatly, and when the bass is handled properly, the midrange and highs will now be heard much more clearly, and not be over-shadowed by the bass.

If talking about taming the bass, the 'bungs' need a mention here, they should also be tried as they effectively convert the speaker to infinite baffle which will reduce the bass output too.

If the OP does not have the bungs Linn will supply replacements for, literally, pennies.

Comparing 140's to 242's.....I owned 212's before the 140's and prefer the 140's as they 'boogie' more (to my ears in my system etc etc); the 212's sound more refined but too polite to me.

Linn: LP12/Cirkus/Tramp2/MOSE/Khan/Nima/Adikt, 3x C6100, M140 aktiv, M112 aktiv, 2x M109 aktiv. Also: Marantz AV7005 pre/pro, BK Monolith DF sub, BDP-S480 Blu Ray, EP35 HD-DVD, Sky HD, HTPC, JVC DLA-X3 3D projector, Beamax 84" fixed screen, 2 cheapo rear speakers.

Thanks to all for your postings on this. A few things in response.

I have experimented on speaker placement ad nauseam and I can't say that it has really made much difference in reality.

One thing further that I would say - at the risk of being controversial - spending c.£8K on amplification (Kontrol and 4100 - biamp) should result in a pretty impressive result with £2k speakers. Having to double-up on amps and then 8 Activ cards (over £5k new) to get a good result might mean good business for Linn but is less good for the customer.

Am I completely out of step on this?

I am not sure how you have your 4100 connected to the 140's?

Speaker placement is key, as Linnrd mentioned, and running Majik 140's Aktiv will gain you big dividends, as mentioned by dubselect.

If they are boomy in the bass, you may need to move them farther away from the wall and corners of the room. Bass traps have helped my system greatly, and when the bass is handled properly, the midrange and highs will now be heard much more clearly, and not be over-shadowed by the bass.

Toe-in with the speakers, when properly done will make the speakers disappear, and the soundstage open up greatly. Your listening sweet spot will expand nicely.

You may consider adding curtains in your listening room to partially cover glass patio doors or windows, and remove ornaments or anything that can resonate/vibrate in the room as these will interfere with the sound quality.

I have had great success with better power cords, and using a high quality power conditioner, and notice you have experimented with that.

You may also wish to read my recent thread "An Hour Well Spent". Separating and isolating speaker wires, interconnects and power cords from each other is a free upgrade, which just requires some time from you.

You may also read the sticky thread for General Hifi, Phobic's "Top Tips"

In short, I don't think you have tapped the full potential of your speakers IMHO. They are fully capable of sounding fantastic.

Good luck

Main System: Akurate Kontrol pre-amp, Akurate DS, Majik 4100 power amp, Majik CD, Majik 140 speakers, K400 Sp Cables, Linn Silvers x2 and Linn Blacks, Acer H340 WHS NAS, external HD for backup; Other Systems: SB Boom, Squeezebox Duet

No. But there is good, and there is better yet. There will always be some upgrade that'll make your system sound even better if you just spend a little (or a lot) more. Just because something else is better doesn't mean what you've got is crap. You can compare between Linn and other manufacturers and see what gives you more bang for the buck. But there's always going to be something somewhere which is better. You need to demo the best possible setup within the constraints of your budget. If you like it and feel you get value for money, then great. If not, look elsewhere.
Methinks.
