yesterday night i completely restarted my qnap (not only the twonky server) and i hit the "rebuild database" button once again. after about an hour twonky had found all media files again and it went into "playlist_wpl"-mode again. i decided to keep it running all night (once again) - and - tata: this morning twonky claimed that it had finished rebuilding the database. success? ...lasting success?
i wonder what made the difference? was it the reboot?

thanks for your adivise on checking the playlists. that is actually very interesting: the playlist container shows thousands of playlists even though i trashed all .m3u and all .cue files. when i click a playlist they appear to be empty. i also checked the corresponding directories of course but there are no .m3u or .cue files. the only visible files that are left are flac/mp3, folder.jpg and the .log-files from the rip. could it be that .log-files or invisible files (not identified yet) caused the "playlist_wpl"-madness?

the same problem happens to me a couple of times a year. I have to force the NAS shut down (because most of the time when the rebuild is stuck, the NAS frontview won't work) and then launch the re-build, to see it working properly.
No idea of what can cause this (whether the failure is due to Twonky or to the NAS), as all the settings are fine and 99% of times the NAS works properly.

Briain is correct - MAC's do create files with a .filename which might well be hidden. If I share my NAS to my Windows 7 machine I can see them, search for them and delete them (they are not actually critical to the operation of the MAC filesystem).

I would also double check that Twonky isn't set to search the NAS trash folder (called trashbox on my buffalo) if you have one and is therefore seeing the deleted versions of these playlist files.

There is definitely something not quite right - just need to track it down.

RE: Twonky: building database "stuck"
Hi

Well I've run various Twonky versions on various devices, but I've never had that issue since removing the m3u playlists (and that was several years back) so as per my previous post, I can't help but wonder if there are either some 'hidden' files causing this. In your case, do you also actually get a pile of playlists showing in that container? Do you use a Mac or PC to rip the disks? I'm just asking these questions in case we can find any links between both of your WPL issues.

RE: Twonky: building database "stuck"
i just browsed the directories for invisible files using both cyberduck (sftp/ssh) plus my mac's finder with a little help from tinker tool (to make invisible files visible).
apart from mac desktop infofiles ".DS_Store" there are no invisible files inside my music directories.
that might be good news for other mac users struggling with similar issues. i am not sure if older mac operating systems leave invisible files but mac os lion doesn't seem to leave invisible files (apart from ".DS_Store") on my qnap directories.

i just restarted my twonky (the second time after it's first successful rebuild) - and another surprise: the 2000+ playlists (apart from 'Most Played', 'Last Played', 'Recently Added', 'Highly Rated') have miraculously disappeared.
all seems fine now.
so in the end it must have been the m3u files only.
what leaves me puzzled is that even though i had deleted the m3u files it took me several database rebuilds, several qnap restarts and several twonky restarts to get my twonky working as advertised...

thank you guys - especially briain - for your great support!
