Linn MediaServer Beta
Dear All,

Over the past few months we have been working on a media server. We now have a beta version available and would like to invite interested people to provide us with feedback.

The media server provides the user with the ability to:

1. Share their iTunes library
2. Save and share playlists
3. Listen to online content

More information, as well as the manual and download links can be found here.

As a beta tester we are very keen to hear about any issues you encounter during installation, setup or usage.

Cheers,
David

RE: Linn MediaServer Beta
Very nice, but when will we see a media server which can stream Studio Master content? iTunes is still effectively limited to 16/44.1, even if ALAC is expandable to higher bit rates and depths I'm not aware of anyone who sells them.

PS What are WebApp's (e.g. BBC) I assume it's just a way to scrape embedded streaming information from static web pages?

RE: Linn MediaServer Beta
Dear David,

Have Linn looked into jRiver Media Center v 17?

Any thoughts you'd care to share?

I have to say it is the best for me by a long shot. But I have no idea why others don't use it.

A script to configure it for Linn would be nice, since the program is so powerful it might be there is an intimidation factor. (This is another dare Briain.)

And Rik if you haven't noticed I have jRiver streaming redbook FLAC at 24bit to the DS. 24/192 stream without problems. Windows 7 version is the only do it all I have experienced. Sound is better, control is better.

Klimax DS/1/D, Klimax Kontrol/1/D, ATC SCM50SL AT, jRiver Media Center v17 Big Grin

Salty Dog system RenewDS, Karin, Klout, Tukans and of course jRiver.

RE: Linn MediaServer Beta
Is this only for iTunes, or can it also be used on a non-iTunes media collection?

RE: Linn MediaServer Beta
I tried 4.1.8 instead, which started OK.

When using Kinsky to browse the albums in my iTunes library, I see each track displayed twice.

I've played some music, which worked fine.

Is there any way to configure the browse tree to display more information?

This is only for iTunes at the moment. We are dipping our toe into the world of media servers with this release, and providing some extra functionality like the Media Apps and the Shared Playlists at the same time. Over time this program will also become a fully fledged media server for non-iTunes media collections and begin to include a whole range of other interesting features as well.

Give us a chance, Rik. This is day one of the beta for a program that will one day do what you request.

Media Apps make internet media available through the server. Don't know what you mean by static web pages here. The Media Apps regularly scan internet-accessible xml and html files to keep their content current.
