Help: adding 2nd HDD in QNAP
Hi,
When i first bought my Majik system with QNAP NAS, I only have 1 HDD in the NAS.
I added another HDD into the QNAP, and in the QNAP web interface, it shows the new HDD.
Now comes the problem, the 1 HDD is full by now, and the status light on the QNAP is red with constant beeping. When i checked the status of both the HDD in the QNAP through QNAP user interface, it appears that all files were copied into the 1st HDD, and the 2nd one still empty.
I went through the QNAP manual, and it seems that I need to set both hardisk to JOBD to create one linear disk volume or RAID 0 striping disk to create one striping disk volume.
I selected both HDD and chose JOBD/RAID 0. But i was prompted that by doing so, all data in the HDD will be gone!
Can someone enlighten me, please and thanks in advance.

You need to EXPAND the volume from one drive to JBOD. I would recommend that over striping since with striping any corruption will mean you lose ALL your data. Ideally one would want to mirror the drives for redundancy, but JBOD is the next choice provided all your data are backed up.

KDS, LP-12/Radikal/Ekos 2/Akiva --> Uphorik/D --> stuff.

Hi, get directly to the QNAP helpline. They are really supportive. Given your setup, you are running risk of dataloss. Not sure if you still can do a backup or export but first you should. Changing Raid e.g. may reformat and thus empty the disks. I would not play and test around.

That is news to me. I found QNAP support to be terrible.

RE: Help: adding 2nd HDD in QNAP
Hi,
Thanks for all advises. Problem is I have 2T of movies and music stored in the first HDD. I wonder how to backup before going for JBOD.

So can i say that whether I go for JBOD or RAID 0, all data in HDD will be gone?

This is rather stupid, right? Sorry, I am new to this NAS stuff. Or can't NAS shows 2 drive, just like normal computers do? Smile

RE: Help: adding 2nd HDD in QNAP
Depending on your Qnap you can attach an external USB hard drive, one of the Qnap options is to perform scheduled back ups to the external drive.

You will obviously need a 2TB external drive as minimum.

There is also an option to replicate data to another Qnap Nas agin this is done without the need for intervention once configuired.

I run two USB drives and alternate between them to try and maintain a current set of backups.

You could also add additional drives to a PC and copy the data to this as another backup.

Mirroring the drives offers data availabiity, but shoud not be relied upon for backup purposes.

I know th apple guys also have some smart solutions available with typical Apple simplicity.

RE: Help: adding 2nd HDD in QNAP
Hi,
I called Qnap service center and they do provide a solution.
Install the 2nd HDD, format it, and after it shows in the disk management, go to the Access Right Management, under share folder, create a new folder in HDD2, and, viola, just copy some data in HDD1 over to this new folder.
As simple as this Smile

Too late to help you my friend as you already found the solution, but it serves as a lesson to many who don't know much regards these NAS's & their different config's.
