I've installed MinimServer 0.52 under Snow Leopard and it works fine. I got no prompts from the firewall (apart from the initial one). Thanks Simon!

However, the problem with the Linn applications Kinsky and Songcast still remains Sad

Thanks for confirming this. It might be that the previous installation of MinimServer 0.21 on Siddhartha's system was causing this issue.

It's really easy to create a self-certifying certificate and sign an application with that to prevent these messages.

That's right, Simon! Uninstalling all previous version and installing 0.52 solved the problem.

RE: Mac firewall asking to allow connections for Songcast and Kinsky all the time.
Hi all,

I have been investigating this issue and have found the following. To summarise, the issue seems to arise given the following:

- Mac with Snow Leopard installed (some investigation on the web has also revealed that early versions of Lion also exhibit the problem)
- Latest Songcast and/or Kinsky
- Mac OS X Firewall switched on

If any of you are experiencing the issue and do not meet the above requirements then let me know.

The problem is not related to a lack of signing, since both Songcast and Kinsky are signed. The problem is to do with **how** they are signed. We recently moved our software over to be signed using an official Apple Developer ID Certificate. This is the way that Apple are now encouraging all developers to sign their applications and is even required if a developer wishes to distribute their application via the Mac Store. It is also required in some situations if the application is to work with the new Gatekeeper system in Mountain Lion.

What is not made clear when moving over to these new certificates is that problems, such as the one described in this thread, can occur on older versions of Mac OS X, namely early versions of Lion and Snow leopard. During my investigations, I found that we are not the only developers to be caught out by this. To fix this issue, we are going have to slightly change the way in which our applications are signed and then re-release the software. Given that this is not a critical bug, we won't be doing this immediately but probably at some point over the next few weeks. For those of you who are interested in the (frankly horrific) details of the problem, a useful blog post can be found here.

The problem does not occur on the latest version of OS X Lion and on the developer previews of Mountain Lion. So, if any of you experiencing this problem are running earlier versions of Lion, I would recommend that you upgrade to the latest version in order to fix this issue. Mountain Lion is rumoured to be released tomorrow, so will be available in the Mac Store for those of you that plan to upgrade. If you do not plan to upgrade from Snow Leopard then the next release of our software will resolve the issue

Regards,
Steven

Thanks for the update Stevens, it is good to know there will be a fix. It's always best to be kept in the loop.

Steven,

I've moved to Mountain Lion and I am still getting the firewall message on each login.

Thanks.

RE: Mac firewall asking to allow connections for Songcast and Kinsky all the time.
For all those who are still experiencing this problem, I have added a fix that should be available in the nightly builds at some point tonight:

http://oss.linn.co.uk/trac/wiki/DownloadKinsky
http://oss.linn.co.uk/trac/wiki/DownloadSongcast

If you do try these out, can you let me know if it solves your problem?

Regards,
Steven

Hi Steven,

I've tried the nightly build of Songcast and it works perfectly. I'm using Snow Leopard and the Firewall behaves as expected.

Thanks for the fix!

Kind regards,

Raimund
