In the newest iOS 6 beta (3), for Apple TV, you can select an airplay device to be an output. This means that if you have an Apple TV connected to your network, and a Renew DS for example, connected to your network, the Renew can play the Apple TV stream. This means, no need of digital input, as the data is transferred over your network.
(Almost) no jitter... No digital input required!
IMHO, this is a BIG feature for Apple and Linn fans.

Is this different from how AirPlay has worked until now? I could always direct music on my ATV to my DS via e.g. the Remote app by choosing the DS from the AirPlay list.

It's an addition. You will be able to watch a movie with the sound being outputed to your DS. You could only do music before, so now you have a DSM like DS.
