Is it possible my mdsm amp is clipping?
When playing very bass heavy track at 50 volume the low kick drum sounds funny through my n804. Instead of a smooth roll off it seems to suddenly drop off.
I have a 2200/d as well and switching to it doesnt sound too different. This only seems to be happenning with a few tracks with kick drums. Playing the same track via the dsm through headphones appears to produce the right sound. Do I need to look at non linn amps like mcintosh? Not sure about whether they are clipping or not, but I certainly would not recommend driving and B&W speakers with Linn amplification.

The amp is not likely to clip, but the track is most likely Loudness mastered e.g. cliped already in the digital domain. My guessing anyway... If Linn amps is not suitable for driving B&W speakers I do not know, but I do know B&W seems difficult to sound any good anyway. Heard many of them using rather expensive Classe' amps (among other) and did not find it to be very pleasing (especially musically). It might have been possible to improve on, to some extent, by applying some serious tweaking to the installations. |

That is possible because all the problems are with iTunes purchased music. For flacs or ripped music, there are no issues. I don't quite agree with this. I found my N804 more musical than M140 or MISOs so I didn't buy them and kept the N804s with the MDSM. I still plan on getting either MISO or M140 for a 2nd room with MDSM as I did like them (esp the M140). My guessing anyway...Considering the horrible combination of impedance and phase angles on the 800 series, I would hazard a guess that it is rather easy to overload the power amplifier. These things need a lot of current as well as a relatively high damping factor if one wants to drive them with a power amp; failing this, it is more likely that the speaker will drive the amp (so to speak) to it's limits. As to whether one finds the sound pleasing or not...it's horses for courses, really, isn't it? D: KDS + CDT-300 + Unidisk SC. A1: SME 20/2/V/MC-A90 --> EAR 324. My B&W CM9 working perfectly with the Akurate 4200d in biamping, even bette than the Linn Majik 140 by far. My bass sound comes just the way it should be. The Akurate power amp is realy fantastic amp.
