Top Plate clean up
Hi all. My first post here. Smile

I'd like to share how i cleaned up a top plate on a deck with one of those magic eraser sponges. Ideally this should have been done with the top plate removed but i had almost finished assembling a friends lp12 when i tried out the eraser sponge. The only part i removed was the switch.

It's meant to be used wet so i applied some masking tape on the plinth and used very little water on a corner of the eraser. I'd say a tablespoon full so its barely damp.

I gently worked the sponge along the brushed finish on the plate in sections
and cleaned up all dirt and water with tissue paper after i was done with that area. I paid particular attention to not leave any water on for very long especially on the bolts, screws and where the top plate meets the plinth.

It took me half an hour from start to finish but i guess it would much faster if the top plate was not installed. I could not remove any of the nicks and scratches but all of the rust like stains and embedded dirt came out nicely. I hope my description and photos are helpful.

Regards

Harprit

Hi Harprit,

Welcome to the Linn Forum.

The eraser sponge you used looks to be most effective in removing the lighter stains and marks. - Nice work IMHO especially as you haven't polished up the bolt tops! Normally when I see a cleaned top plate they are often silver.

Did you rub the eraser over these bolt tops or did you work round them?

I have a slightly more heavy duty cleaner and I'll try and take a picture tomorrow, It was recommended to me by Gustav (a member here). It really works wonders, but it's difficult to avoid polishing the bolt heads so I normally remove them and then re-fit new ones when I'm finished, so quite a long job. Worth it though Smile

Kind regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

I just went over the the bolt heads. The sponge is quite soft and does not feel abrasive at all but it works well in removing stains.

Hi Peter. Following one of your previous posts I have also used ballistol oil and it is indeed an amazing SS cleaner. In fact I first tried a magic-eraser equivalent and the results were quite good but not perfect. Ballistol was very simple to apply (I have their ready to use swabs which are perfect for the job) and the top plate simply came out as new.

Yes Ballistol is very good for cleaning of small marks and gets a really good shine. Way better than WD40 IMHO and it also is pretty good at helping to loose the odd nick, small mark or small scratch on the wooden finish Linn plinths. It will leave a little resedue, so another wipe with a paper kitchen cloth after a day or two is worthwhile if you get the time and inclination Big Grin

As you see, the other more aggressive cleaner I use, is Pierre Verte bathroom cleaner. It's a powder and you use the sponge provided in the tin, dampened a little to apply it. It's a very fine powder and other bathroom cleaners may work, but if you want to do this kind of work, please find a red bearing cap first and try a test piece under the platter where if you don't like the results you won't have to look at them!. Also please mask the plinth as Harprit has shown above.

Provided you go from front to back with the "grain/finish" of the top plate and not side to side, results I've had have been very good, removing stains and small scratches from view. Obviously for deeper scratches a new top plate is the answer IMHO as there's allot of rubbing anyway for the small marks, let alone the big!

Anyone ever used Bar Keeper's Friend? Active ingredient is supposed to be oxalic acid. I've used it on the brushed steel on my american fridge without any issues - finished with a very thin coat of baby oil to keep it looking good!
