Definitely NOT Trivia - opinions sought
All,

* Upgrade to Davaar 9............
* KONFIG - Successful....but initial flaky response.
* SEKRIT - Successful at 1st attempt
* KDS/1 - FAILED, then success at 2nd attempt (why should that be?)

THEN.....a veritable tsunami of problems......

* No access to RipNAS music from Chorus on i-pad
* Internet Radio OK (?)
* Kinsky (on Mac) could only access SEKRIT not KDS
* Performed total system shutdown
* Restart
* Refresh/Rescan Asset UPnP database
* Kinsky on Mac now OK, however.....
* Chorus unable to access music
* Delete Chorus from i-pad
* Re-install Chorus

All now function satisfactorily. And of course the resulting harmonious musical nirvana makes it worthwhile..........it does?

BUT

In my mind this raises a fundamental question (and I am sure this cannot be related to this Davaar 9).
DS (as manufactured and marketed by LINN) should surely be as straightforward as using any other Hi-Fi, should it not?

Most friends (far, far cleverer guys than me, Doctors, Finance Directors, company MDs) who have seen and listened to (and appreciated) it have confessed they are honestly terrified by the associated technology.

I could just about imagine my aged parents working a CD Player, but to mine at least (80's), I (a mere 61 year old) get the distinct impression that performing brain surgery would be easier for them than using LINN DS.

Perhaps I am somewhat unfortunate as we do suffer from what I believe to be a higher than normal share of power cuts (1/month on average) and a rather poor internet bandwidth (2Mb). Neither of which I have any control over..........Rolleyes

I would appreciate any thoughts....

Best:- KDS/1, KK/1, M5100, AK242, RipNAS 2TB, Sony STS505ES, SL-D2
Better:- SEKRIT, KARIK III, NUMERIK, Wadia 170i, Rega ELA Mk3
Good:- SNEAKY, Totem Dreamcatchers

We are talking about beta software, aren't we? The terms said "use on your own risk".

I never had any major issues with productive releases.

I am no computer geek, and it does scare me too.

Fortunately, I have a friend who is good at this, and there is rarely a problem.

RE: Definitely NOT Trivia - opinions sought
This is primarily one of the reasons that I am contemplating the exorcism of the K-DS/1 and R-DS from my systems. The Minister of Finance requires something with a spinner to just get on with life when the urge to listen strikes.

KDS, LP-12/Radikal/Ekos 2/Akiva --> Uphorik/D --> stuff.

Sorry, perhaps I gave the wrong impression. Yes, I did mention D9, but I am NOT talking about beta software.
My thoughts were aligned more on the 'absolute' technology and I don't think D9 was particularly to blame. Maybe it was the catalyst, maybe not.
And I certainly don't hold LINN responsible for this.

I think that mine was more a case of network 'addresses' and perhaps databases being corrupted by these blasted power interruptions.

I object to the ageist remarks. Tongue

I am 66. I set up all the system myself having read and digested what I could from the internet, Linn Docs and a helpful dealer.

In general terms I have not had any major problems. Yes a few niggles but a lot less than for example trying to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

I will say that an "Understanding IT for Dummies" would be a handy publication. IT people are sometimes quite unhelpful because they don't understand how stupid and lacking in basic knowledge of the subject most of us are.

Just stick with it, it's worth the effort in my opinion.

RE: Definitely NOT Trivia - opinions sought
From a power cuts perspective, just put the NAS, and router on a UPS and you should be fine.

Main System: Renew DS > Exotik+DA/D > A2200/D > 242s (mk2)
& A3200/D > 106c, 104c's (using Linn Silvers & K400, on Hutter rack)

Dining Room: Sneaky DS > Majik 109s (using "K200")
Bedroom: Majik DS > Tivoli Radio Model 3 + Companion Speaker

I think that's the deal: if you have it set up right, there are few problems. The reverse is also true though but, if you're seeing problems, it is more likely network set up issues than Linn DS software bugs.

Good dealer & forum support should get DS owners, & potential owners, to a stable network, and reliability that's up there with CD or radio.

+1 for plugging your NAS into a UPS... and having a back-up of your media library

My aged parent listens to the radio mostly - I have my dad's LP12 (thanks dad) - but he uses the computer most days so I don't see that he wouldn't be able to select between BBC R3 & BBC R4 on KDT if I set up a TuneIn account for him with only those presets, and set up his DS to default to Radio, and no auto updates... but then I did work in IT, and I am a young 'un at only 47 Wink

I find the noise from the callow youth to be a trifle amusing. Although I am 80 now I set up my system when I was a mere 79. I have the advantage of having been an engineer in my pre retirement life.

I tend to proceed cautiously in a stepwise fashion and validate performance at each step. Setting up the system does require trying larger chunks than one might like but it is still possible to take small steps.

My audio pusher was of some help and got me through the basics. Later steps have been on my own.

While engineers may not be great communicators to say the least I find that most professionals have trouble communicating the workings of their fields to outsiders, even some so called professional communicators.

The problem with age is not the passage of years but rather allowing the mind to shut down.
