Mystic felt mat (again)
I know there were already some threads about the felt mat and its two sides (please read them AFTER your vote).
http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.p...light=Felt http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.p...light=Felt http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.p...light=Felt http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.p...light=Felt http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.p...light=Felt http://forums.linn.co.uk/bb/showthread.p...light=Felt Some thought there is only one right side, others said there is a Hi-Fi side and the other side has more musicality. And some hear no difference or can’t say which side is better. So maybe a poll brings some light in the mystic felt mat. || LP12 SE || Ekos SE || Akiva || Klimax Radikal/D || Urika || RME DS with JRiver 17 || || Klimax Kontrol/1/D || 4 x Klimax Solos/D || Komris || || TimeTables || RCM Keith Monks Mk. RE: Mystic felt mat (again)
Couldn't tell you whether it's smoother side up or down, but one side was/is definitely more musical... Not sure I'd describe the 'other side' as more hifi tho' - I'm inclined to say the good side was obviously right; the other side just obviously wrong. Not sure how that translates to your poll so didn't vote

RE: Mystic felt mat (again)
Me too, I can tell which side is more musical, but can't differntiate which side of the mat is smoother.

RE: Mystic felt mat (again)
I find that the rough side up/smooth side down just helps the rythmn. Like the song seems to be faster, but the musicians have got more time.
The good side is just more toe tapping, its subtle and yet its a yawning chasm too. An undercover agent for the Blues. ![]() The Sara Doctor. thesaradoctor@gmail.com |

RE: Mystic felt mat (again)
Personally, I don't look at the mat to see if one side looks smoother than the other.
Listening is the best way IMHO and then I mark the less good side, so as to make that the underside. Many know that I use two small self adhesive paper dots for this. BTW I always ensure that they would be under the record label and not under the playing surface. RE: Mystic felt mat (again)
I think the mat has been improved recently and it's harder to tell visually which side is smoother. Like others have said, better to just listen.

Of course, and that is what we did here and Peter's dots are still there, it could well be that the side that ends up underneath becomes smooth from being in contact with the platter, whilst the upper surface tends to become "hairier" due to the occasional quick brushoff it gets from time to time............................

RE: Mystic felt mat (again)
Rough side up = bigger sound stage for me. Smooth side up = smaller sound stage on my system. I prefer a bigger soundstage. Beyond that I can't tell any differences regarding the matt.
