George - this has been considerably improved recently.
I think you'll find your above requirements here:
http://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/DS_Network_Setup

By the way, if you are going to try Bri's suggestion of the one-wire PC/DS solution, don't forget that you'll need to run a DHCP server on the PC! Otherwise the DS will just sit and blink a blue led at you forever. - Alternatively (and better) is to link both into a router running a DHCP server.

RE: How trouble free has your Linn DS system been??
I have now had my Majik DS for about 6 months. I bought it together with Majik Kontrol, Akurate Tuner and Majik 6100 with 3 way Aktiv cards for my Ninkas. I set it all up myself, although the dealer did install the aktiv cards for me. I already had high spec PC, and wireless router upstairs, with network cabling down to the living room to connect to a KISS video recorder/media streamer. To accommodate the DS well , I just installed a small ethernet switch locally to supply both. This works fine - even with both DS playing 192/24 and the KISS playing DIVX videos. But in any case, I am unlikely to WANT to use them both simultaneously in the same room! The KISS can play music - but only MP3s. I had grown to love the convenience but hated the very noticeable downgrade of quality from CD. I had been dying for an audiophile product like the DS!

Well I switched it on and it blinked and then I got a circle. I looked in my router's config page, and the DS had announced itself and gained an IP. OK, what do I do now? Ah - time to RTFM! I downloaded and installed Twonky, LINN Config and GUI, and then I was playing music! OK, then LINN Config announced that a Firmware update was available (from Auskerry to Bute). I had some adventures getting this to work, but got there in the end. Unfortunately, my Kontrol also had Auskerry, and this is only Dealer upgradeable, because the Kontrol does not have failsafe fallback like the DS. I had to put up with this - main thing no RS232 comms and hence no vol control from control point. I have just had the kontrol upgraded by my dealer.

Problems - only with Control point software! The released versions work ok, but are very basic. I got an iPAQ and I run KinskyPDA. This crashes a lot - all seems to be to do with artwork, which is maddening. Probably, most of this is Twonky's fault! I am currently trialling ASSET. This seems promising - artwork works better. But it is very slow at presenting Artist/Album listing, and it uses twice as much memory on my PC.

It seems to have been a LONG TIME since we had an official LINN software release! We seem to be on a very slow boat to CARA!

I managed to get it working as the firewall was causing all sorts of problems. I now have to find out how to let it all work and have a firewall. My firewall says it allows all messages from Linn Gui but that is not enough.
