C2 Error Pointers, How Important Are They?
I have an iMac and use XLD for ripping FLAC files. My superdrive supported C2, but it died. I purchased an external LG drive (lg-GE24NU40), but it doesn't support C2 pointers for ripping CDs. Just how important is this C2 ability? I select secure ripping and check against the Accuraterip database. I selected C2 for thousands of rips and am somewhat uncomfortable with not being able to do so now. I'm a mac guy and will consistently use external DVD CD drives moving forward, so if you have a better idea for a drive let me know. Thanks. Jeff

Not better, but avoid the Seagate GoFlex series, its a pain and goes off when you least expect it.

Spoon has produced a very useful guide which explains many of the technical aspects of secure ripping (including C2 pointers) very clearly. The bottom line seems to be that without C2 pointers you do lose a layer of protection, but this does not matter if you get a match in AccurateRip.

Sadly, the performance of drives varies (and there is even sample variability within individual product lines), so it is hard to offer advice based on product reviews or other people's experience, both of which can rapidly go out of date. If you are fortunate enough to have a good local dealer in your area who still builds and repairs PCs (and they are becoming increasingly rare), he (and it will be a he) may be willing to advise you which drives he is currently prepared to supply and support.

There is actually an argument for getting two drives of different makes; a disc which will not rip securely on one drive will often work perfectly well on another. Switching the ripping process to another drive is one of my techniques for dealing with an insecure rip.

David thanks. I've just reread spoons guide after a few years. I spent a couple of hrs today trying to find a new external drive for my mac that supports c2 error pointers and I can't find one! I'm going to talk with a local repair person. It just makes me nervous not finding have the feature.

I understand your concern. But Spoon points out that different manufacturers, even if they support C2 pointers (or claim to), do so to different degrees. If you can get hold of a drive which your dealer is happy with (so that you have two drives to choose from), and use AccurateRip plus secure ripping when necessary, I reckon that you will have no problems with any track that rips with an AccurateRip match or a secure marker.

David.
