RE: What albums really make your Linn shine?
Just played Brian kennedy's 'A Better Man' through the DS for the first time since I ripped it and it sounds really good. The third track 'Won't you take me home' is my new 'show-off the bass' track as it doesn't come in for over a minute, but when it does it's wonderful. Rest of the album is well recorded as well and some good tunes

The CD "Anything Goes" from 1962 performance will highlight what good recording used to be. Better than many newer recordings.

RE: What albums really make your Linn shine?
I'm sure everyone in this forum has had the "Audiophile Epiphany," where you experience a system or a song/album that had such a profound effect on you it remains fresh in your mind years later. The most memorable listening experience for me was in the early '90s and was a series of firsts: first time I heard Keltiks, first time I heard a high end analog rig (which happened to be an LP12/Lingo/Ekos/Arkiv) and the first time hearing Peter Gabriel's So. I was so blown away with what I heard I went straight to the music store and bought the album on CD, only to be thoroughly disappointed with the sound. Didn't stop me from playing that disc to death and enjoying every minute of it, but when I FINALLY got an LP12 of my own (last year!) one of the first albums I cued up was a Classic reissue of So on a 200 gram slab. Ahhhhh...that's more like it!
Another particularly memorable listening experience was the first time I heard Mary Black (in particular her cover of Dimming of the Day on her Babes in the Wood album). There wasn't a single piece of Linn hear in the demo (Krell CD player, CJ tube amp, Wilson WATT/Puppies with MIT cables) yet the emotional power of the song was so strong I almost fell out of my chair. I guess we 'muricans can...on rare occasions...tune dem too, although this was the only time I responded to that song in that way...'till I got my LP12. A few years later I found myself working for a local hi-fi chain (10 stores). We had just picked up REL and the US distributor was at our store for training. I was listening to Babes in the Wood when he walked into the room and harumphed at my choice, dismissing all of Mary Black's music because of the poor recording quality. I thought to myself, "spoken like a true audiophile." Upon reflection I wish I had said it out loud. Besides, with the exception of one or two tracks on one album, all her recordings are quite good...or maybe I'm just not as golden eared as John was (is?). I also find myself gravitating to the early Police albums a lot more on the LP12 than I did on the Rega it replaced. They seem to really come alive on the Linn. TTFN, Adam TTFN, Adam LP12/Cirkus/Tramp2/Lingo2/Ekos1/Dorian, Linto, Slimline Kairn, LK100, Tukans, Silvers, "K200", Loricraft PRC-3/4 |
