Yes, a DS has digital volume control for the DS section and no extra inputs, so single source only. DSM have preamp and multiple inputs available.
The Majik series has an inbuilt (stereo) poweramp, Akurate and Klimax series not.

When you´d use an Exakt system, the stereo poweramp inside the Majik DSM is not usable anymore.

Another difference: Majik DSM has an MM phono input, Akurate series MM/MC and Klimax none.

When buying s/h do note that only the last and thus actual generation has Exakt ports which you´d require if you go for an Exakt system stepwise.

Are you privy to some insider information Wink

No, I've heard nothing from Sunbeam on this - just joining some dots.....EDIT just had an email from HOL to say that there are no plans to supply an Exakt crossover for the Arcs....

RE: Where to start with a streaming system
Seeing as the 10k budget you mentioned was to include furniture, cables, etc... thought I'd mention that with an Exakt system you will not need expense on hi-end interconnects (all you'll need is half decent ethernet cables such as AQ Forest ~£100 for a pair).
Speaker cable - probably £100-£200
Furniture - depending on number of boxes, but something nice such as HiFi Racks or Custom Design could be as much as £600 (or more)
NAS and HDs - £500

Ballpark and very approximate, but that does take 1k - 1.5k of the budget.
So for upto 8.5-9k, if you were to got Exakt, AEDSM + Majik Exaktbox-I plus speakers of choice (up to four way).
I have the 140s and very pleased with them I am too, and just under budget even if bought new.

Now why would I say that? Nothing like selling one's own system... Wink

RE: Where to start with a streaming system
Ok, (and I'm putting my tin hat on now) but aren't the Majik 140's passive ? So if I buy an AEDSM and Majik Exaktbox-I, do I need to pay more to convert the £1800 140's to Exakt ?

No, all it needs is for the crossovers to be bypassed, 5 minute job. When I bought my Ebox-I, the dealer did it for my existing 140s as part of the installation.

RE: Where to start with a streaming system
If you buy Majik 140s new then any dealer will convert them to Exakt usage (active) for free.

Should you buy a pair of M140s second hand then they may already been converted to active should they come from an active system.

If it´s a passive version then either the previous owner may be of help, or the Linn forum will help you along Smile

With Majik 140s there´s an option of a solid aluminium base plate. This is highly recommended as it takes the performance of the speakers certainly some notches up.

Yes, a DS has digital volume control for the DS section and no extra inputs, so single source only. DSM have preamp and multiple inputs available.

It is worth remembering that even though the DS lacks the inputs of the DSM, you still have access to internet radio and Airplay, so that you can stream content (BBC iPlayer and similar etc) from devices such as iPads/iPhones and probably other devices that connect to your network. Sorry I am not familiar with Android devices.
