RE: Katalyst for Klimax Exaktbox and Klimax 350 Speakers
Well, there will be a time when older hardware just won't be able to coop with newer features (*). This doesn't seem to be the case now, and I have no idea if the hardware in the newer devices already has more CPU power or memory.
But inevitably, it will happen. But as it is, the oldest DSs are 10 years old and still can have the latest software.

*) this is already true for HDMI and Exaktlinks of course, but sonically the above still holds.

Back in September we promised that we would be rolling out Katalyst across the entire Klimax range.

Today that promise is a reality.

From today, your local Linn Specialists can now take orders for the new Klimax Exaktbox AND the new Klimax 350.

Both products now include our 4th Generation DAC Architecture, Katalyst. As promised, upgrades are available to the latest spec for existing customers of Klimax Exaktbox and Klimax 350.

If you thought the difference Katalyst made to the Klimax DS was big, wait until you hear the difference it makes to products featuring Exakt technology...

Make sure to book yourself in for a demo with your local dealer and experience the difference for yourself.

In the meantime, head on over to the website for more information: http://www.linn.co.uk
As sadly, I can't afford The Katalyst upgrade for my Klimax Exakt boxes, I am concern in the future of software Exakt upgrade.
Will Linn continue the upgrades for the old DAC or will the upgrades will be dedicated only for the Katalyst boards ?

Linn have been good at keeping legacy versions maintained so no need to worry.

They still support KDS/0 and the ones in between that and the current Katalyst version so I agree; should be nothing to worry about at all.

Mick

My concern is not the support, indeed I know that Linn will continue to support its products, that the least they can do !
It is the future software improvements I am worried about, as in the last year and specially at the beginning of this year, the new releases have made a huge sound improvement.

Sorry; I think I was less than clear. I was referring to software/firmware, and attempting to indicate that the very first DS Linn manufactured, back in 2007, still gets firmware updates.

could we have a bit more information on Katalyst Exakt, please?

Is there any difference to the non-Exakt upgrade?

In Craig's initial post it sounded like the effect for Exakt systems would be even bigger. If that's correct, why would that be?

What about the mentioned Dual Mono vs. Stereo filters?

Thanks!

There are two upgrade options available for 350 owners:

1. Upgrade your passive or Aktiv speakers to the current specification (this includes both Exakt and Katalyst)
2. Upgrade your Exakt-enabled speakers to the current specification (Katalyst upgrade only as Exakt already integrated)

The benefits of any upgrade are more apparent when you eliminate loss elsewhere in the system. Because Exakt technology gives us a lossless signal, the difference that Katalyst makes to your system is enhanced.

Also, you're essentially heading 6 x Katalyst DACs.

In regards to dual mono vs stereo filters:

One of the major upgrades we've made to the new Klimax Exaktbox is a bigger processing engine. This allows you the new Klimax Exaktbox to run dual mono up to three way.

And at the bottom line somebody will buy them and start with Exakt, activate his speakers and needs additional 6 channels of amplification, doesn't that sound great to LINN?Big Grin Last not least it is sustainable for the environment to recycle those main boards ... Smile
  • LINN is not sure what to do: offer Renew for KEBoxes or not? Come one LINN, give yourself a push, your faithful Klimax customers are worthwhile to get those Renew option
  • LINN doesn't offer Renew for KEBoxes Sad in that case: what to do with all those boxes? bring them back to the basement? Sad

Renew has been, and still is, a way for you to upgrade your DS or DSM to the latest spec and receive your old boards back to use in another room (even if that isn't necessarily how it's used).

Renew is not something that we will be supporting for Exaktbox.

We will of course continue to support you. Filters will be available for all levels of Exakt-enabled systems as and when they are released.

I can understand your decision as the Renew option is more for reuse in another room (and there are not so many customers out there having two exakted Klimax roomsTongue) than lowering the investment; I will sleep about it and talk to my dealer ...

Of course it's only my opinion, but I do think this is a shame. I don't think I'm alone in coveting KEboxes to feed my 242s. Being retired (with no fat pension!) there's absolutely no way I'd ever be able to afford the stratospheric price tag of same. Purchase of KEbox Renews would be the only way I could ever hope to achieve owner ship. Equally it might be the only way current owners of KEboxes could afford the Katalyst upgrade - by sale of their KEbox Renews. Just because they could afford KEboxes in the first instance does not necessarily mean they could afford the extra to Katalyse them. I believe by offering KEbox renew they'd be making quite a few folks very happy campers. I know this is a simplistic view, but all the same, I believe more than a few Linnies will be dismayed at Linns decision not offer not to offer Exaktbox Renew Sad

This allows you the new Klimax Exaktbox to run dual mono up to three way.

Can you explain, I don't understand the benefit, for example in my case having two Klimax Exakt boxes driving two Akurate 4200 and a pair of Klimax 350P

There is no benefit in your situation as you need more than three Exakt channels to drive one loudspeaker.

Previously, owners of 3-way speakers like Kaber or Kudos T-808 could use a single Klimax Exaktbox to drive both speakers. However, it had limited processing power so those 2x 3 way speakers used what are called 'stereo Exakt filters' which are a little compromised in their 'exactness'. To get the best filters meant the use of 'dual mono' filters which are more exact. So the new KKEBox (KEBox/1?) has more processing power so it too can now run 'dual mono' filters, giving an exacter filter profile.
