New Exakt Filter - Akubarik?
Got a notification in Konfig of a new filter dated Jun 28 2017 but the filter number (3.0) and description (file format change to accommodate updated design using new model including 4th order low frequency) are the same as the ones from around Oct 2015. Nothing else has changed according to the release notes. Can anyone from Linn comment?

RE: New Exakt Filter - Akubarik?
Now here's a thing. I'm on the beta programme, and have had the version 5.0 Akubarik filter for some time. But today I fired up Konfig, and it sold me that there was a new software download, dated 30/1/2017 (!), for my Exaktbox 10.

I did install the new (if it is new) software. And first impressions are that that it does make a difference. sound-wise I was, as it happens, playing a Linn 24bit 96kHz recording (Bach Violin Concertos, John Butt and the Bernardinis) just before the download. Running through the tracks again, I had a distinct impression that the sound was fuller, particularly at the bass end, with no loss of detail but with (I thought) a slight reduction in transparency, which is perhaps understandable with the fuller sound. Obviously, I will have to listen a good deal more before coming to any firm conclusion.

So people are extolling better sound when installing an older version of the software? Interesting. Perhaps we should look back to the claimed improvements when the software they now have installed was originally updated.

Of course! We see that all the time: Change X and people report better sound if there is a positive expectation. (X can be: new firmware, software, better cables, CAT7 Ethernet, putting things on/under your gear, disabling HDMI/inputs, etc.).

And the reporting is correct because the change really leads to a better perceived sound. Where the improvement comes from is a different question: A real (physical) performance improvement, expectation bias, or both, (or, ...) To find the exact origin is a complicated process (correctly set-up double-blind tests etc.) that most folks understandably don't want to embark on (although it would be the only possibility that can identify the real source of improvement, and not even in all cases).

I think it is not a problem, just that it is useful to be aware of these effects especially when considering to spend $$$ on cables, upgrades, etc.
