Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
Hello Everyone,

I'd like to propose, and gather feedback on, a reorganisation of the forums. This is in order to make the structure clearer and more useful to new and existing members alike.

Here's the new structure to chew over:

Getting Started
  • Ask a Question Not sure where to post? Ask a question here and we’ll get it to the right people.
  • What to Buy Looking for a Linn system, but not sure where to start? Get help and advice here.
  • FAQs Helpful answers to the most common questions.

Linn Music Systems & Hi-fi Separates
  • Network Music Players and Music Streamers: Linn DS Get help and advice with Linn’s streaming music systems and range of Network Music Players.
    • Space Optimisation (Sub Forum)
    • Exakt (Sub Forum)
  • Hi-Fi Separates and Components Looking for advice on Amps, Speakers and other components like CD players? We’re here to help.
  • Turntables & Record Players: Linn Sondek LP12
    • 3rd Party Modifications and Parts (Sub Forum)

Music
  • Recorded Music: Recommendations, Reviews, and Discussion Sound-off here and add to the collective playlist.
  • Vinyl Room For the turntable inclined. What are you spinning right now?
  • Live Music Been to a great show lately? Got tickets to a gig? Let us know.

Announcements, News and Events
  • Announcements & Linn News
  • Linn Events

Beta
  • Beta Testing Discussions of Linn beta software and firmware.

Meta
  • Forum and Community Feedback
  • Linn Website Feedback
  • Off-Topic

Any thoughts or comments?

RE: Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
The main thing I'm swithering about at the moment is the Announcements, News and Events section.

I'm wondering if, Linn Events should come under Music, and Announcements should just be forum wide announcements/stickies that are time limited.

Jim

RE: Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
Personally I'd like Linn Events as you show them in the first post, Jim. Also, may I suggest any announcement threads be read only? Sometimes an announcement of a new product or upgrade gets swamped by pages of comment, and thus can get watered down. We can always start a thread elsewhere on the same subject.

Mick

PS I like the idea of Beta rather than Development. I think it's clearer.

MDSM/3 * Majik 109

RE: Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
Hi Jim.
I think overall it's a good proposal. I especially like the "Linn music systems" with the subforums for SO and Exakt. That has been asked for and I'm sure will be warmly received!
I wonder where general development questions would go though. I have just now asked a question about firmware updates, but I'm not on Beta for that particular thing so wouldn't fit anywhere obvious. Perhaps that could be another subforum in "Linn music systems" to include more general development questions?
Are the FAQs going to be read-only and only updated by the mods when an Ask a Question? question gets over used/asked?

I think Events should stay where there are. Why would an Exakt Surround event come under Music? Wink
Just initial thoughts.

RE: Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
OK but I think the sub forums need to display better. At the moment the 3rd party forum is only barely visible on the forum front page. You cannot access it from the LP12 forum itself. I think it should be in a separate tabbed box on the front page and accessible from the LP12 page too.

Saying that I don't think that Linn should host 3rd party adverts but that is a whole different topic.

Also rename Linn Events to Linn Dealer Events. I think that Linn Dealer Events should also require that the Dealer not only post their shop name but also their approximate location so that people new to Linn find it easier to see what is relevant to them e.g. Hidden Systems, Hampshire, UK EXAKT Demonstration

RE: Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
LOL - funnily enough my comment was going to be the opposite to the mick's.

All of the other sections are broken out to structure them. (Possibly more than needed e.g. Not really sure why vinyl music and Digital need to be separated as the threads within Music would do that but have no issue with it. )

However the development has been narrowed to beta only. What about suggestions or live problems. Seems a bit odd not to give them a home. I think a separate beta sub forum makes sense. Or is this deliberate? I have noticed that many questions in the development forum are just ignored of late. Out of interest if the forum isn't the place to raise these points, how are customers supposed to raise questions and issues?

RE: Proposed Forum Re-Organisation
Further to my thoughts on Development/Beta, perhaps it would be better/clearer to have a Software forum, with the Beta subforum under it? That way questions regarding Kazoo and firmwares could go there (and things like the MinimServer configuration help), while only specific Beta stuff goes in Beta.

Lol - just as Martin said in his last point! Great minds....

Yeah, it's tricky. Make it too fine grained and you end up with a lot of quiet forums and indecision on which one to post in. To few, and you're not sure where it should go. One of the reasons I've provided an Ask a Question forum at the top.

In this case I'd think it would just go in the Network Music Players forum. If we do end up with a bunch of similar posts, then perhaps we could break it out further. At the moment 'development' forum is a strange mash-up of Beta stuff, app developers and people, feature requests etc. which isn't great either.

Yeah, thats the idea. A read-only resource.

That is an option, however often people think they have a sofware problem, when they don't, or the other way around. Wonder if they might simply be better under the DS forum? Or would that be frustrating do you think?

+1
Where would one announce/discuss new versions of Kazoo, Konfig and the like?
Not to mention the discussions about sonical differences of firmware etc.
I suggest calling it SW and make Beta a subforum instead.
