Sub for 109s
I'm deciding between the BK and REL.....thinking specifically between the Gemini II and the T5. Any thoughts?

I am very aware it shouldn't be a factor Rolleyes but I really hate the gloss finish on the RELs and love the color options on the BKs

RE: Sub for 109s
I have a REL T5 because it's small and compact. It suits me perfectly, but I'm sure Tin will be around soon to correct me, as he is of the opinion that older RELs are better for music than the newer ones. He's the sub man and rates BK.

Akurate EDSM | Majik ExaktBox-I [on Custom Design iRAPs] | Majik 140, REL T5
Rega RP1, [QNAP HS-251+, Jitterbug, MinimServer, Asset], Kazoo [Linx1010]

AV: Marantz NR1506 | B&W 620(C), M1(S), REL T5 (LFE) | Fronts powered by Linn
Net: NetGear DGN2200 | GS108 | AQ Forest x3

RE: Sub for 109s
I -think- the BK subs are very good, but that is a theoretical opinion.
The prices are good, they look nice, are available in both front and down facing and have a neutrik connector. And they should be made the same way as the older RELs of which I'm very fond.
Second hand prices suggest I'm not the only one.

I would suggest you buy a 200 or 300 down facing BK as those are easier to place than front facing ones.
The reason I'm not suggesting a larger one is that I found that 2 subs give better definition than a single one, and a second small coffee table is easier to live with than a second fill size fridge.
Of course if you have a very large room you may want a larger one, but with a normal sized room a smaller one should be fine. Than, if you want you could add a second one. Having said that, I lived with a single 300-sized REL for over 10 years, so it's not that you'd be left wanting.

My 2 cents.

PS timster, how could I ever correct you if you claim your T5 suits you perfectly? That's really up to you.

Tin can telephone system.

RE: Sub for 109s
I had a REL: T1 with my 109s. Particularly when properly adjusted and set up in Space Optimisation, it integrated very well. I had to buy the Akubariks to get something I regarded as significantly better.

Main system: [Basik/Basik+/K5/Lejonklou Gaio >][Roksan Kandy Mk III >] KEDSM > Akurate Exaktbox 10 > Linn Silvers> A4200 x 2 and A2200 > K600 > Akubariks
Second system: Kiko

RE: Sub for 109s
There is a reason however that I have continued buying old RELs instead of new BK ones: I think the crossover starting at 40Hz is too high. It could work with passive 109s, and will obviously work with Exakt which will take over the crossover, but I put the crossover at 22Hz with my Aktiv 212s and wouldn't want to have to put it any higher.

40Hz? That really is quite a high starting point for a sub. The little T5 starts at 23 FYI (how many extra octaves that equates to is... 1 (ish I think)?).

I think that's the low-pass frequency...

What David said. Smile
The sub itself would start at 17Hz (-6dB) or so.

I think it is weird though, why would you have a crossover start to crossover at 40Hz, anyone with full size speakers would prefer a much, much lower frequency.

Stasia: if you can find a second hand Rel Stampede, Strata V or Storm V, I can full heartedly recommend those.
They look the same as the BK Elek ones (actually, its the other way around).
I do recommend the BK's in Exakt environments where Exakt takes care of the crossovers.

I appreciate your (and everyone's) two cents!

I'm curious why you suggest the 200s or 300s over the Gemini? I like the idea of two and realistically I will start with only one, especially given my small space.
