Linn LK85 (Majik 3100/4100 favoured now)
Hi folks

I’m running a mixed AV/Stereo system with the AV-Receiver using the stereo in unity gain mode for the front L&R. Stereo is Linn Majik DSM and Majik 140’s.

I’ve recently upgraded my centre speaker to a Monitor Audio Silver. Now, I was thinking of power-amping (bi-amping) it with a stereo LK85. It seems to me that my Yamaha RX-V781 is a bit lacking compared to my Majik DSM in terms of amplification. So, a used LK85 seems a cost effective method of improving my surround sound experience. Also, a. Linn amplifier may help in keeping the front tone together.

Does this sound reasonable?
Is there a better option anybody can think of?
Is there anything to watch for with these amplifiers?

Thanks for your amassed knowledge.

Rich

RE: Linn LK85
I am surprised you find the Yamaha under-powered. It seems quite capable. I'm not sure adding an LK would improve things much, from other discussions on centres, it is apparently better to have similar speakers for tonal balance across the front in a 3/5/7 system, rather than "matching" the amplification per se.

I don’t think the Yamaha is under powered, it’s only driving 3 channels and it’s power output is greater than the LK85. However, when I first used unity gain I had a Marantz AV-R SR5003 at 100wpc and a Marantz Stereo amp PM7003. The power amp mode of the lesser powered stereo amp made a huge difference to my existing front L+R speakers at the time. Much greater control and punch to my ears. So, I was thinking Bi-amping the centre with a better quality (if not power) amplification would reap rewards. Also, the AV-R power supply’s generally aren’t up to the full amount of potentially driven outputs, so all AV-R driven channels benefit when one less is used...

I’d have loved to buy a Majik 112; but, in matching gloss black it would have Been >£1k. A Komponent 106 also wouldn’t get past the living room aesthetics test... Sad So, I made the move for the Gloss Black MA Silver centre... A bargain £300 centre and a used £200 two channel amp seemed like a good potential improvement to me...

I posted a thread a couple of days ago about the centre. But, settled on the MA Silver as a good fit for my budget and the aesthetics of the living room. It already sounds much better than the speaker it replaced. Tonally it isn’t far out at all. It’s a bit sharper than the Majiks; but, fits in reasonably well to my ears.

I had MA RS6’s before the Majik 140’s and so I got what I expected. The Majik DSM lifted these after the Marantz amp before them. So, I was hoping a Linn amp would further narrow the gap.

If I get it wrong I can always sell on the power amp, or more likely bi-amp some other speakers somewhere... So, worth a try. But, if there is a better amplifier or something to be wary of I’d love to hear suggestions. A Majik 2100 would be ideal, but beyond my budget. I’d guess near to £1k for a decent example. Then, I’d have the option of closely matched bi-amping my Majik 140’s if it did nothing for the centre...

The answer to your dilemma is a Majik centre speaker. All other options are skirting the issue.

I know you’re right... However, my surround sound inclinations and other components don’t justify spending £1k+ on a centre speaker... Gloss black for the living room aesthetics. I don’t do multi channel music, it’s just for TV and movies.

Having just notionally “downgraded” from a Marantz SR6009 to the newer Yamaha RX-V781 and upgraded from a Monitor Audio Bronze to a Monitor Audio Silver centre I’m so much happier with my setup!

I’d needed to change my AV-R after having 4k issues with the ARC from my tv. I couldn’t workaround for my Apple TV 4K. So, I opted for the most basic AV-R that fitted my needs, intending to power amplify as required. Savings here to pay for a power amp...

We watched Wander Woman last night in 4k off the Apple TV. This only gets DD Audio, nothing spectacular. However, the clarity and integration was much better than I’d hoped. The overall sound was leaner, more precise and with greater clarity than my previous combination. This worked better for us. Smile I’ll have to check it with known films...

My Hi-Fi is my main toy, so I’m now thinking a Majik 3100/4100 is my best solution. I’ll stalk eBay... Power amp/bi-amp the centre and bi-amp my fronts. Hi-Fi gains help to justify spending... I’d seen a Majik 4100 sell for £500 this week...

The Majik amps are much less common for sale, but I now think I can bide my time.

Ideally I’d have a windfall, buy a Majik Exaktbox and Majik Centre, then power amp the centre with the DSM’s internal amplifiers...

Personally I wouldn't bother with an LK85 for 2 reasons - it wasn't the best amp in its day, and it will sound different to the DSM, so, like the speaker itself - better to be patient and strive for consistency.

Hi Rich,

I have a similar setup: MIsos and MDSM. I went for Komponent 106 and LK85 as bargain solution. And I have OPPO as a source for all AV-stuff. You do not need the AV receiver.

Regarding the Yamaha receiver (which are generally excellent, by the way) has it been configured for 4 ohm speakers? If so, it will be seriously crippled, and will deliver much less power than its spec says. Set it to 8 ohms and go easy on the volume control.
