Cymbiosis LP12 Build
Hi Guys,

Having recently "downsized" for financial reasons from an LP12 Majik which I loved to a Rega Planar 3 (which was good for the money) I found I simply wasn't enjoying the music as much and I was just listening to CDs. However funds did not allow me getting another LP12 Majik so I spent ages looking at ebay adverts for LP12s and parts but concluding it was a lottery. I had almost given up the hope of getting an LP12 again when I came across a small advert on Cymbiosis's website in which Peter Swain offers to build an LP12 from part exchanged and new parts to a customers budget. https://www.cymbiosis.com/product/linn-s.../#noaction

So I contacted Peter and let him know what I was looking for (a very simple spec LP12) and how much I was hoping to spend. Peter then sent me an itemised quote and I placed a deposit. I had to wait a short while until he got the plinth I was after and while he was in the US but the wait was worthwhile. After he got back he sent me an email to say the deck was ready to be collected so I drove 150+ miles to Rearsby and Peter spent over 2 hours with me showing me how it was built, making final adjustments and demonstrating various options and how to look after it. It was a really enjoyable learning experience.

I have now been the proud owner for a couple of weeks or so of an LP12 comprising a classic mint 1992 corner braced Linn Afro fluted plinth, new Cirkus Kit, new outer platter, lid and hinges with Class A serviced and modified PSU and mint Linn Basik Plus tonearm with new AT95e built by Peter. It looks virtually new and sounds brilliant, is really engaging to listen to and my Naim CD hasn't been used since!

Peter also kindly recorded the stages of the build with photographs and has sent them to me.

By the way I did a calculation which showed me that if I had sourced the parts from ebay and built it myself it would have cost at least as much and probably more and I would not have had the benefit of Peter's expertise and craftsmanship in the deck.

I hope my experience will encourage those of you who are trying to get an LP12 on a tight budget to contact Peter at Cymbiosis and ask for his advice and what he can do for their budget or if their location makes it impractical their local Linn dealer.

For me this has been a great experience and a reminder of the old adage..quality and expertise pays. Thank you Peter!Smile

RE: Cymbiosis LP12 Build
Great story. I did by the way experience a similar thing. Got a 2nd hand RP3 with external PSU and Ortofon 2M Bronze intended for th cottage in the mountains. Totally boring (tunevise) compared to even my Basik. Bought a few parts from local Linn dealer in order to do the same as as you (I had a few parts from previously)

LP12, Keel, TigerPaw, Radikal, Ekos 2, Kandid, Urika, AEDSM, Majik Exaktbox I, MISO
Secondary system: Linn LP12, Ittok, K18 MkII, Majik DSM/2, M6100, active M109

RE: Cymbiosis LP12 Build
Good news all round, owners can trade their "old" plinths etc. and end up with pristine decks.
For me, and many others, a fluted afro plinth just shouts LP12 and is a design classic, my plinth and lid are about the only original bits left. That Peter's expertise brings affordable LP12s to the market is a great bonus and you can be sure it will be as good as it can be.
Enjoy your music.
Best wishes
Steve

Pays to go to a dealer of high repute rather than the overpriced eBay lottery. The only reason I did not ask Peter to source me a lightly used Ekos was I got one of known provenance from a friend with endless upgrade-itis that still had it's original cartridge mounted & checks out perfectly. Peter is a gem!

What a fantastic review, and fantastic service.

Seriously impressive, and a great testament to Cymbiosis.

I'm starting on the path to get my ancient LP12 upgraded to a similar spec, and can only hope it comes close to this level.

Thanks guys for your kind comments, much appreciated. I felt it was the very least I could do by way of a small thank you to Peter for such an outstanding service and end product.

It is so refreshing to deal with Peter who is still enthusiastic for the product and professional in what they do.Smile

RE: Cymbiosis LP12 Build
Kudos to Peter and Cymbiosis, maybe one day I will cross the creek to pay a visit Wink

I only wished my local Linn dealer had such a stock of LP12 parts for their customers on a budget (like me).

Don't get me wrong, David Mingace is the most capable Linn Specialist I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. His knowledge of the LP12 and experience working with them is second to none but his stock is limited.

Obtaining reliable second hand parts here in USA Florida feels like a painful full time job Tongue
