Kaber tweeters
Hi there,

I am currently running a pair of Linn Kabers with a Naim 250.2 amp driving them. The speakers have the SPKR015/02 tweeter driver in them. I've heard that there are newer tweeters available, but am not too sure on what my options would be ?

Roy.

Roy
Surprised no one else has dived in to help, but my $0.02.
As far as I know the latest in the 015 series of tweeters are the /05, a pair of which a dealer supplied me a couple of years back for around 135 quid. An alternative touted in some forums is the 038/2 Ninka tweeter which is considerably cheaper at around £38 a pair I believe and considerably easier to fit having open tags at the back but opinion seems split on whether they are well matched to the Kaber. They look near identical from the front with a three bar grille but are a slim open backed design unlike the enclosed 015s.
I have a pair but haven't got around to swapping them out for the /05's in my aktiv kabers, mainly because soldering in the 5's to replace 02's was rather too nerve-wracking (and in hindsight better left to a dealer), to warrant further experimentation just yet.
The sonic differences although a definite improvement were not night and day to me, though if I'm honest my upper auditory register was too compromised a long time ago by age and too many loud rock concerts to be the finest judge.
But I love my Kabers and have yet to hear anything I like better.

RE: Kaber tweeters
Well, Roy, after efp has said this things about tweeters, now some words from me:

The good news: the 15/3 or 15/5 (there are no 15/4s) surely are an upgrade to the 15/2 you own.
The bad news: As far as I know the 15/x are out of stock Sad.

Imho the Ninka/Katan tweeters aren't that good: more brilliance with the 15/x. I've changed the tweeters of a Katan to 15/5s and they are doing a great job Smile - and years back I provided Kans (I) and Saras with 15/1 or 15/2 speakers: great performance too.

But I can't say what you've got to do if your tweeters are damaged - look for used 15/3 at the four-lettered auction house or take 38/2. Don't know about other options for the moment...

Martin

LP12 (Radikal/Keel/EkosSE/Lyra Helikon)/Urika/Akurate DS/Klimax Kontrol/4 Solo's/Cambridge Audio BD650/Majik Isobarik/Qnap TS-109/SilentWire & Nordost - now in heaven with Radikal/Urika

RE: Kaber tweeters
I used the Ninka 038/2 with good result on my Keltik. They replaced the 15/3 and the Ninka treble units were clearly more musical.

Tune dem and source first rules!

RE: Kaber tweeters
Martin / efp,

Thank you both for your advice. Guess if anyone has a spare set of 15/5's then I'd be interested in finding out about them.

Thanks,
Roy.

RE: Kaber tweeters
I have replaced the tweeters on my Kabers twice. I bought my Kabers in 1991, first replaced the tweeters in 1992 with SPKR015/1 by Linn themselves when they were upgraded, and then in 2006 with SPKR015/5, done by a dealer. Both were big improvements. However a word of warning. The allen screws on the tweeters have now locked solid on one of the speakers. They are impossible to move. The dealer was supposed to seal the solder with a glue gun, he didn't do this and I only noticed when I took the first tweeter out to check the connection, as mentioned the other tweeter is locked solid. So beware when removing the allen screws !
