Is it a typo on Linn's part, or a relative bargain if you add in the Summer Promo?

According to my dealer in Germany it's not a typo and the KDS will be phased-out.

That would be a shame as it seems to be a component that's used, like the LP12, as a high quality source in a number of non-Linn systems.

Most likely a reflection on KDS sales figures and the number, potentially, out in the second hand market. Just Linn being realistic.

A halo product that sits in other systems is very valuable for brand awareness. It can't be costing much to keep it going for that reason alone.

Of course, this could create a whole new set of rumours about the replacement of the Klimax range and the September announcement being a new "beyond Klimax" DS in a new box design.

Mick

I'd suspect so, at least at the Akurate level. Albeit the sales figures of my dealer do in no way represent Linn’s sales figures for DSs in total, they are a quite good indicator. As he has told me, his DS sales has significantly dropped down during the last years and that he really very seldom sells any DS these days. The vast majority of his customers decide to buy a DSM instead, no matter of the level (Klimax, Akurate or Majik).

I’d guess that even after September Linn’s halo product will be still the Klimax DSM. From my point of view the lower suggested retail price for the KDSM was a marketing decision aimed to not lose the very few potential customers considering the KDS as the source in their non Linn system.

Given the current list price differences between Majik and Akurate level (especially with respect to the DS(M)s), I think that it’s more likely that we’ll see another level between Majik and Akurate.

It could also be that Linn have recognised that the reviews, as good as they were when the /3 came out, have almost always bemoaned the lack of inputs of the KDS without even mentioning the existence of the KDSM. At the price point, that could well have impacted sales too.

RE: Klimax DSM price drop?
Shame though, if for no other reason that this is only the second time in twenty-five years that all the items in my system are ‘current’!
Mind you, the way Exakt seems to be picking up, I could see Solos disappearing too, which would be a shame as Solos are a nice flagship product.

Mick

Klimax LP12 * KDS/3 * Solos/1/D * Akubarik/P
MDSM/3 * Majik 109

... plus on my limited experience of 2 KDS/3 and 1 KDSM/2, both KDS sounded significantly better than the KDSM.
