Standard Power Cables vs. High End Cables
Hi,

as I'm new to the forum, I didn't know if this point was discussed before.
Last week I get installed my new hifi system, including a Klimax DS, Klimax Kontrol and Klimax 320A LS.

My Dealer told me not to use my Power Cables from NBS and Heavens Gate, which I used before. He thinks the cables will not improve the Linn Komponents sound quality.

Is there someone out there with an opposite experience?

Thanks in Advantage.

Yeah this debate is all over the forum, just search for "cables." Big Grin

My answer, before anyone else posts, is YES, especially with your components. But what are you willing to spend on cables? Most high end cables don't do anything but colour the sound and that is why Linn says to stay with their cabling.

Custom built cables, such as Transparent, are designed to match the impedance of the components and do a great job on removing any transient RF noise which is everywhere. But make sure you are sitting down before you see the price list.

RE: Standard Power Cables vs. High End Cables
As you have both sets of cables then I would suggest you use your own ears and not the opinions of others. Do make sure that you do the swap back and forth at least 3 times. I would also suggest you get you partner to do a blind listen (you have swapped the cables before they enter the room). I have done the latter a few times in the past and have saved a load of money as a result!

RE: Standard Power Cables vs. High End Cables
Thanks you both,

first: I have the cables, so I do not have to spent money on other Power Cables.
second: sadly I haven't got someone in my house, who is sharing my hobby. So most of the time I have to switch the cables on my own.

I'm just interested in the point, if there are some technical reasons, maybe on the new Dynamik Power Peaces, that makes the use of High Price Power Cords irrelevant.

Thanks for Answers a lot.

RE: Standard Power Cables vs. High End Cables
What i can tellyou is that i spoke to a linn engineer and he explained me all about the dynamik ps.
It was really interresting hearing , but the main improvment with dynamik is that is completly eliminates the influences of bad mains.

I have tried many different power cables including shunyata anaconda and nordost valhalla and it would NEVER use enything else then what linn supllyed you with when you bourgt the component period.

ALwyas sounded better to me espicialy on my solos, and with dynamik chakra amps, you will thank me for saving the money and also tightining up the sonic picture.

RE: Standard Power Cables vs. High End Cables
I once had a discussion with a Linn engineer and was told that due to their Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) technology, it would be a total waste of money to replace the Linn-supplied power cords. The engineer went on to say that if power cords would make a different (for the better), Linn would offer these. As a matter of fact, I was told that all Linn components (including the Klimax line) are supplied with the same power cords.

The same arguement can be made for power conditioners.

RE: Standard Power Cables vs. High End Cables
You dont have to pay a lot for a good cable. Linn cables are just fine. (including IC's and speaker cables)
As CJ wrote, use you ears.

Actually, Linn cables are NOT just fine, they are very very good. And better(=more musical) than all super expensive options out there I tried. Havn't tried the cables mentioned in this thread though...

I would agree, however I did find initial differences in sound with my Kairn when I used standard shipped mains. The sound to me was muddled (wooly), and I reduced this by making some high quality cables with MK plugs that had heavy duty copper shielded cable (one end only). I think I managed to buy the bits from Farnell for £15 to make 3 cables, and copied a high end street cable that retailed for £100 each.....to which I could make to a specified length myself.

To also prove this, my Ikemi was on top on the Kairn and a difference was made when moving this away.

I will put this down to the PSU in the Kairn being a noise magnet, but not sure if any difference could be heard now after I replaced this.

I have tried mains conditioners and would agree they make the sound worse in my opinion.

Everything gives off noise within acceptable measured manfacturing limits, so minimising this effect travelling/radiating into another piece of kit, would hopefully improve the sound reproduction by reducing this being amplified or distorting the real music....

Use your spare, trick power cables with your kettle. The tea will taste much better!

Chris

Question...Why do they shield cable, if all cable was to act the same.....?

So Chris tell us what system you have and how its connected, via chocolate wrappers, spoons, keys....surely you have cable that is "just cable" ....I am interested to know!!!
