Linn to cease production of CD players
Just heard a short news article on Radio Scotland while driving home from work.

Linn are to cease production of CD players at the end of this year. "CD is dying" and as all of here will know digital streaming is the future Smile

I'm sure that many who are around the same age as me and lived through the introduction of CD in the early 80s are revelling in the fact that despite the portents of doom declared all those years ago vinyl is still with us Cool

It was noted in the article that Linn are still making a turntable Smile

Edited to add clicky link to BBC Scotland news web pages which unfortunately gets a few things wrong:

Quote:Yet it continues to make turntables for vinyl records, as there remains a demand for the quality of sound compression offered by older record technology

Oops

Quote:The Beatles' back catalogue has been re-mastered and is leading the move to that premium-value sound quality, and it accounts for 70% of Linn Records' downloads.

Beatles back catalogue downloadable from Linn records? I don't think so.

Poor Douglas Fraser is a bit out of his depth methinks...

A rep from Linn (international sales rep) visited my local Linn dealer 2 weeks ago and at that time he said that he would not be surprised if Linn would not introduce any new CD players. He said that since Linn was able to build and sell the Akurate DS at a cheaper price than the Akurate CD, that sounds better, why bother. However, he did mention that Linn would continue to support the existing line of CD players.

A/DS(d), A/CD(d), Magnum Dynalab MD-90 FM Tuner, VPI Scoutmaster(sds), A/K(d), A/4200(d), Katan(a), Katan Stands, Majik 126, Linn Silver ICs, Signal Cable Ultra Speaker Cables, QNAP TS-209 II NAS & Grado GS-1000 headphones.

Where can I buy shares? With the Majik DSi on one hand and this CD announcement on the other, Linn are nailing it.

And I've just seen a nice feature on BBC1 Scotland's 6.30pm news programme.

What's wrong with that? Plenty of vinyl recordings used compression - obviously loudness and compression are limited by the physical medium of vinyl, but it's been going on since Motown times at least.

RE: Linn to cease production of CD players
Saw it on BBC News channel about an hour ago with an interview with Ivor.

Who'd have thought years ago that CD (well players anyway) would bite the dust as being defunct whilst the same manufacturer continued to make turntables to play records on!!

If you'd told someone that this situation would occur all those years ago, they would have had you locked up and no jury in the land would have found you innocent of utter stupidity.

You have to give a smile to the person who said "We're never going to make a CD player" (because of the poor quality), then comes out with the best CD player in the world for many years once a decent one can be made, then allegedly dumps CD players because of a better format.

It's a classic. (or should that be Classik?)
