Converting to FLAC from other format, eg mp3
I only have one album of mp3s that I can't get in lossless form.

Any converter you'd recommend to convert this to .flac?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Has a free trial period. Need to download their FLAC plugin too. Which also can do level 8 compression. Right click multiple files and it utilises multiple processors if you have them.

If you select the basic option, then it is free forever! Additional fancy plug-ins and DSPs are extra $$$.

I've been using it since I bought my Akurate DS last March and no complaints so far. I use it to convert the WAV files created during my Viny ripping sessions to FLAC files.

RE: Converting to FLAC from other format, eg mp3
May I ask what is the point of doing this ?

The DS range can play MP3 files natively. Re-encoding a lossy compressed file to a lossless format will NOT restore the 'missing' data - flac files made from MP3s will sound identical to the MP3 source - nothing gained, nothing lost. Flac files are considerably larger than MP3s hence by doing this conversion the only difference will be using more disk space unnecessarily

....or have I missed something

Hi.

I completely agree with rockfather - so if he has missed something, so do I...

RE: Converting to FLAC from other format, eg mp3
"Every time you encode with a lossy encoder, the quality will decrease. There's no way to gain quality back even if you transcode your 128kbps MP3 into a 320kbps MP3 (or any other high-quality compression).
Transcoding between lossy formats is therefore generally not recommended. The sound quality of the result will always be worse than the (lossy) source file.

Warren.mp3 : ) i.e. its missing something, or at least it/I was.

I thought DS's only played WAV and FLAC. Or perhaps they only used to.

So yes, I have now deleted the FLAC copy of the album and have just kept the mp3.
