Can't access ReadyNas Duo through My Network Places - Help please

RE: Can't access ReadyNas Duo through My Network Places - Help please
OK, I get it.

At the risk of pushing my luck, what's a subnet mask? Do I just use 255.255.255.0 on every IP address?

Thanks for your help and patience.

(2010-01-10 21:23)rweten Wrote:  Good question! The answer is any address that's in the range set by your router. Here's an easy way to figure this out.

You find out, or set, your router's range through your Netgear router configuration page. You select Lan IP Setup.

If you're like me you may have the router's address set to something like 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

Further down the page you have the option to set the router to be the DHCP server for your network. When you turn this on, you also have to set a range of IP addresses that the router can allocate to other devices on the network. In my case the range is 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. So the router has up to 253 addresses it can hand out as needed.

Once you've set the range of addresses for the server, you can choose any one of those addresses for the ReadyNAS. As I mentioned in my earlier post I chose 192.168.0.250. I then set that address in the network configuration of the ReadyNAS (see above), and also reserve the same address on the router (further down the LAN IP setup page) so that only the NAS can ever be assigned that particular address.

Hope that helps.

I set mine up just slightly simpler than that - all I did was assign/fix the address in the router's DHCP settings, then set the readynas to pick up its IP from DHCP... As it's fixed in the router's DHCP settings it should always get the same address, and if I want/need to change it I only have to do so in the router. Network access is by (host)name & upnp discovery, rather than by address so, even if I do change something, it should still work (unless XP caches the actual address)

Not sure which is the right way but if they both work then that's cool Cool

Milo, it may be easiest to wiki network subnet masks, but I think 255.255.255.0 means machines sharing that subnet can only 'see' each other if they share the same first 3 'segments' of their address - so all 192.168.72.xxx addresses can see each other, but can't see 192.168.1.xxx addresses, unless the subnet mask is set to 255.255.0.0 If that's wrong I trust someone will correct me Smile

You typically want to set it to 255.255.255.0 so that you can keep your network separate: music from work from kids/games, etc...

RE: Can't access ReadyNas Duo through My Network Places - Help please
Hey everyone,

Going back to the original problem here.
I'm having the same problem now.

I can put the UNC address in and it asks me to log in (?) but won't show in My Network Places.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it could be something to do with the user account I've got set up on the ReadyNAS.

What would the implications be to files that have been created after I've logged in, if I was to delete the user?
I know in windows, the default permissions would revert to any administrator but as I just can't seem to make sense of the permission settings on the ReadyNAS, if I was to delete the user and permissions weren't set, how would I access the files that were previously assigned permissions to the deleted user?

Thanks

RE: Can't access ReadyNas Duo through My Network Places - Help please
I thought that when I found these posts I had stumbled upon the answer to my problem!! but.....

I have been banging my head on the desk for 2 days trying to get our new ReadyNas Duo operating as a simple backup archive.

Initially everything went well and I connected 3 PCs across our small office network and even completed a quick trial back-up, which we were all able to see and access. Woohoo! , result!.Big Grin
Then, for no apparent reason, no-one could access the ReadyNas and any attempt to locate it on "Network Places" seemed to stall the PC making the request, requiring a task manager intervention to stop the task. Sad
A reboot of the ReadyNAs seemed to correct the problem and everyone could see and access the files again, but as soon as any attempt is made to set up a new back-up with the "Shadow " software we get a message saying that the ReadyNas is disconnected/unavailable and we have to re boot the ReadyNas and sometimes the PC's as well before contact is restored.!!
