What is Kinksy Jukebox?
Sorry to be dim. Is Kinsky Jukebox an alternative for Asset or Twonky and Kinsky desktop i.e all in one? Any simple explanation would be appreciated. Thank you all.

RE: What is Kinksy Jukebox?
Jukebox is software that you run "once" and it numbers all of your albums and proves a big catalogue of your collection that you can print out. You then look through this catalogue, pick what you want to listen to, type in the album number into a normal Linn remote and your DS loads that album into its playlist.

@warren

I am just as dim as balhoon claims to be, so thanks from me on this as well

Does that mean, that once Kinsky Jukebox has catalogued it is only required when additional albums are added to the catalogue: i.e. while selecting / listening to music KJB does not need to run.

RE: What is Kinksy Jukebox?
I would love to try Kinsky Jukebox but am a bit scared of the initial setup as the instructions for use with a QNAP NAS are daunting to say the least with warnings about corrupting the QNAP.

Am I worrying unneccasarily ?

Main: KDS1, KK1, Oppo 105, Klimax Xovers, Tundra Monos, Klimax 350.

Second: Majik DSi connected to 109's in the kitchen, and Akurate 212's in the office, driven by KCTD.

Hi Chris,

yes this is correct, KJB does not need to run when you are selecting or listening to music. For selecting / listening to music, you just key in the number of the album that you assigned to that album (or other selction) in Kinsky Jukebox previously. You only need the NAS to run (and the http server on it), no other software required.

Hi flatcoat,

I am not sure about QNAP. With my ReadyNAS, it actually had no chance of corrupting anything. I just enabled the http server and then assigned the presets to what Jukebox scanned on my NAS. It then stores those presets on the NAS in a directory (very small files) and sends the location of your music collection to the DS. If there are no particular issues with QNAP, I would definitely recommend to give it a try. I am using the remote control to select music now 95% of the time instead of the ipod touch. Maybe someone familiar with QNAP can chime in.

Regards,
Tim

I am guilty of the warning. You need to login to the QNAP as root user to setup the web server to serve the Qmultimedia directory (where audio is stored by default). Whilst logged in as root you have the power to change anything on the system.

The chances of anyone managing to corrupt the system accidentally is small, but is possible by inadvertently deleting system files etc. Hence the warning .......

Alternatively if you store your music files under the Qweb folder then no system changes are required (if I remember correctly). This is the safe option if you are uneasy about tinkering with the Qnap

RE: What is Kinksy Jukebox?
Hi,

As a user of the Jukebox I can recommend it over the "other options".

This is a really easy way to play your music without all the hassle of a computer or PDA in the listening room.

Yes I accept you cannot see the album art or make playlists but you never had playlists when you used a CD so use KJB and enjoy.

Scan for Artist/Album then when printing the booklet display only the title. Then you sit with a small A5 booklet with all your music and your remote, excellent.

RE: What is Kinksy Jukebox?
Hi all

I look forward to experimenting with KJB over the next few evenings.

It looks to me to be the closest thing to the CD Metaphor i.e. put an album and press play - all from the remote, and no messing with laptops / iPods etc.

However I actually now prefer the KDT way of doing things -build a playlist of multiple albums and leave it playing in the background, making occasional changes to the content / order of the playlist according to mode. However for those evenings where I leave my laptop at work - or just can't be faffed to open it up, then KJB looks like a good backup.

Thanks and Grüsse,

Chris

RE: What is Kinksy Jukebox?
One of the best features of Kinsky jukebox is the way you can browse your collection via the handset and display of the unit. Of course not much use to a sneaky or sekrit owner but still very usefull.

Have a look at the manual: http://oss.linn.co.uk/trac/wiki/KinskyJukeboxManual
