Embedded cover art
Does anyone know if linn records offer the option of embedded cover art with downloads? I couldn't see an option on the site. The png/jpeg solution has never worked on my set up. Tried all the lower/upper case folder.jpg suggestions (nothing worked). I was always under the impression that embedded art didn't work well with Twonky (4.4.9 on Qnap 409) but all my rips (XLD) have embedded art which shows up, and even podcasts that my wife has downloaded from itunes all show cover art.

I converted a Linn download to ALAC, dragged it into itunes, added art, then converted back to FLAC (as Apple won't let Linn play 24 bit ALAC). Long route but at least it shows cover art now.

Is there another way to embed art?
It would just be easier to have the option from Linn Records.

Cheers

RE: Embedded cover art
Hi Paul

Png is no good with Twonky neither embedded nor as an external file. Jpg is ok for embedded art and as a Folder.jpg file in the album folder of your library.

Caroline asked this question a while back: Preferred artwork with downloads, but they haven't found it timely to change the format of at least the cover art to jpg.

I've just tried playing around with XLD, but I'm just not compatible with it! Never mind, that's just me...it's probably fine for ripping. I can embed art with Max - just can't figure out how to make XLD do it...Rolleyes Can you? So whenever I need to embed cover art I use Max.

Don't hesitate to ask if you want some specific hints regarding Max...

When you've got the time - maybe on a rainy day have a look at this, Paul:
Fix for those wanting JPEGs in FLAC files.

The first part takes you through the process of embedding art through the command line/Terminal - it's very interesting although a bit hairy...I've succeed doing it, so should be fairly simple...Wink

I think there's another software for Mac that does it too, but maybe it's one of those mentioned by Mike1.

Cheers
Tom

PS. I've started using Songbook Mac when ripping...does a neat job, no logfile though, but accuraterip neverhteless - AND embedding jpgs...

PPS. Just remembered, Max actually embeds pngs - sorry...forgot I'd made a custom rebuild...Rolleyes

RE: Embedded cover art
Hi Tom.

Thanks. Will have a look.
Maybe I should pm Caroline and see if there will be an option for embedding art.

In XLD go to preferences>metadata. There is a check box for embedding art.

RE: Embedded cover art
Hi,

On the topic of embedding pics in the individual file's tag (tested this with FLAC and MP3), I use mp3tag, which I find fantastic and easy to use.

On the topic of folder level pics, the solution working best in most situations is still folder.jpg. This is especially useful if you have mixed infrastructure (for example Linn + Squeezebox and more).
So the name and the format of the picture is important.

Linn records downloads seem to be systematically accompanied with pictures in .png format only, which would need conversion (by one of the tools available on the internet) to JPEG in the above configuration.

I found the showing up of the art in Kinsky Desktop (which is my currently preferred control point software) to be very dependent on the UpnP server as well.

Maybe there are some Upnp servers that are happy with .png.
TwonkyMedia Server is not, and ReadyDLNA is not either in my experience.

I am in the (never ending) process of improving tagging and have BOTH embedded JPGs as well as folder.jpg in every folder - and I have a folder for each album. Mp3tag also helps in renaming files from tags and vice versa.

Hope this helps.

Hi MDreamer

You consistantly write "folder.jpg" - is the Capital F in Folder not still a requirement? As for naming and format type with ReadyDNLA - in my setup a "cover.jpg" file does it...Wink

Hi Tom,

Am not at home but will check as soon as I can.
I would almost bet an upper case "F" is not mandatory... but I will check whether the pics that don't appear in my setup are helped by "upper case-ing" them.

Cheers,
MD

RE: Embedded cover art
Linn delivers very high-def *.png coverart with their download - which is great but 1.) too large to really embed 2.) no *.jpg therefore trouble with Twonky.

I simply use a little graphics programm to downsize them and convert into jpg, then embed them into the audio file. But it would be neat if in addition to the large png files the Linn download package would include embedded 600x600 jpg's which would save some time and trouble converting...

Hi Tom,

Finally found the time to verify.

EDITED - as I was providing incomplete information in earlier version - SORRY

Actually, it seems to really only boil down to what the media server picks up. I know that there's a list in ReadyDLNA (minidlna.conf) that lists all the file names that should be considered relevant for media art. In this list, all variants (cover.jpg, folder.jpg, etc.) are enumerated once with lower case, and once with upper case).

So as long as your server is fine with both upper and lower case, that shouldn't matter.

I actually name all of the manually tagged art "folder.jpg", but some of the downloaded stuff comes with "Folder.jpg".

Cheers
MD

BTW : Kudos/Thanks to Briain (+ super-poussin I guess) for making a well-behaved Twonky for the ReadyNAS.

RE: Embedded cover art
And which UpNP server DOES display embedded graphics? OK, Twonky does not.
