Linn motor speeds for 50Hz & 60Hz mains power?
I would like to know whether my below understanding is correct or not - so perhaps a US-dealer can provide input?

1. In the UK (and Oz), a 50Hz Premotec motor is used in an LP12.
2. It's a 24-pole motor, hence it spins @ 5x mains frequency = 250rpm.
3. The pulley has an appropriate diameter to make the inner-platter rotate at 33 1/3rd rpm.
4. The Lingo outputs a frequency of 67.5Hz to spin the platter @ 45rpm.
5. The US otoh has 60Hz mains - hence, a 60Hz Premotec is used.
6. This spins @ 300rpm - hence the US pulley has a different diameter.

And now the fact which I am not sure of:
7. In the US, 60Hz is used to deliver 45rpm - so the Lingo delivers 44.44Hz for 33rpm?

Thanks,

Andy

don't the newer power supplies supply the motor with same frequency no matter what the supply frequency is?I was under the impression this was the case from the valhalla being developed but I may be getting mixed up and it could be the input voltage that doesn't matter

RE: Linn motor speeds for 50Hz & 60Hz mains power?
The Lingo (at 33 1/3) outputs 50 hz, so if you want to use a Lingo you have have a motor with the right size pulley for 50hz mains no matter where you live. If you're in the UK, or Oz as you said, then the 50hz. motor is also good for a Majik supply since the mains is 50hz.

If you live in North America our hydro is 60hz so if you want to run a Majik power supply on the LP12, you need a motor with the 60hz. size pulley, the motors are actually identical but you can't change the pulley only, they are pressed on. You're other thoughts are all correct, the Lingo puts out a higher frequency for 45 rpm.

You're final thought, the 60hz mains in North America with a 60hz sized pulley delivers 33 1/3 rpm. If you have a Majik supply, you need an adapter to get 45 rpm. which is simply a sleeve that fits over the pulley to enlarge it.

Did this answer clarify it for you?

In the US:

Valhalla and Lingo - 50Hz motor

Basik and Naim Armageddon - 60Hz motor

LP12, Exposure amps, Tannoy Speakers, Mana & Symposium Supports
