Katalyst Majik DSM
Hello

I've been observing some of the hype around Katalyst and it seems like a big deal.

Anyone got an idea how long it may take for this architecture to trickle down to Majik level?

It will probably eventually trickle down, but if you want to speed the process up you'd have to set the factory on fire where the DACs currently used are being made.
Otherwise I don't think it'll be before 2019, but that is just my personal guess.

Accurate has to come first

And Klimax Exakt before that. That will be interesting, because it will begin to show us how easy (or otherwise) it is to pack Katalyst technology into the tighter spaces often associated with the Akurate and (particularly) Majik product lines.

More interestingly, Linn have to decide how they will "downgrade" the Klimax Katalyst circuitry to Akurate (and possibly Majik) level.

RE: Katalyst Majik DSM
Frankly I don't understand what could be so difficult...

I saw the Klimax Katalyst board in the factory and it seems to have the same dimensions as the previous one (not surprisingly).

And as just the DAC has changed (maybe some other parts as well), space Big Grin doesn't seem to be the issue.

I assume the SW and testing is the bigger challenge (and maybe to keep the sound hierarchy of the Klimax, Akurate and Majik series)?

Which wouldn't apply to the Exakt devices, so what could be the challenge here? The Katalyst work is done, transfer to other boards doesn't seem to be that complicated but probably I am underestimating what is needed...

RE: Katalyst Majik DSM
Katalyst isn't just a DAC change, there are five individual voltage regulator circuits to be accommodated around the DAC chip that weren't there previously.

RE: Katalyst Majik DSM
At the factory visit we were advised that Katalyst has been squeezed into the Klimax Exaktbox, but it was a squeeze. There will be 6 tranformers in there already, without all the extra regulators for Katalyst. So Akurate Exaktbox6 should be OK, but 10 will be a squeeze.

Determining how to implement the sound hierarchy is an interesting challenge.
