NAS recommendations
Set up my DS , using it just now only with Tidal, now ready to move my personal collection to a NAS, thinking of Western Digital , OK ? Or any advice, all backed up elsewhere, just wanting something reliable.

RE: NAS recommendations
Usual advice is QNAP or Synology. You'll want to make sure whatever you choose has the music server you want to use. Not sure what is available for WD.

Akurate EDSM | Majik ExaktBox-I [on Custom Design iRAPs] | Majik 140, REL T5
Rega RP1, [QNAP HS-251+, Jitterbug, MinimServer, Asset], Kazoo [Linx1010]

AV: Marantz NR1506 | B&W 620(C), M1(S), REL T5 (LFE) | Fronts powered by Linn
Net: NetGear DGN2200 | GS108 | AQ Forest x3

RE: NAS recommendations
I've no experience of Western Digtial's NAS offerings but the recommendation for NAS drives is usually WD Reds.

I have a QNAP NAS and apart from one minor glitch with a dodgy WD Red which was replaced under Warranty I have had no real issues for several years now.

And of course someone has to repeat the Mantra - RAID is not a backup!

Unidisk SC | Majik LP12 | Trampolin 2 | Lingo 3.
Akurate DSM/2 | Akurate Exaktbox 10 | 2 x Akurate 4200/1 | Exakt dual-mono Keilidhs
Raspberry Pi 2 Model B | IQAudio Pi-DAC+ | Audiolab 8000A | AR28s.

RE: NAS recommendations
You can't run any of the server packages that folk here prefer (MinimServer, Asset UPnP and Kazoo Server) on a WD NAS. The reason for recommending QNAP and Synology is that they have better user interfaces, and the capability to install third party applications fairly readily. For a music server, this is a key consideration, which, I suggest rules out the more 'closed system' offerings you get from people like WD and Netgear.

Music server duties will not unduly stress even the less powerful (ARM-based) Synology and QNAP models. As you are already maintaining a backup (which, as Donald says, is very much the right thing to do), you can actually get all the functionality you need with a compact single drive model if finances are tight. For your use case, money may be better spent on increasing drive capacity (still using a suitable drive, such as a WD Red) than on duplicating drives in a RAID configuration.

That’s one for me to read up about, but Minimum looks likely.
