No rear sticker - where is my serial number?
Hi

I've just bought a second-hand LP12, there is no sticker on the back.

Is there a way of checking anywhere else on the deck?

Best regards

Edward

Sometimes the serial number is scratched on to the underside of the top-plate. Of course this assumes your deck has it's original top-plate.

Mine is very old and the serial number is located on the top plate underneath the inner platter.

It could have been built from parts and not have a serial number.

In which case , dating it will be a process of you posting lots of photos of its component parts for us to ponder and debate at length. Big Grin

The best bet with any 2nd hand LP12 purchase is to pop it along to dealer so that he may check all is OK and that the deck is correctly set up to perform as it should.

Thanks guys!

Since I paid £700 for it should it turn out to be a "new build" from bits its hardly the end of the world, as long as it plays well!

Good suggestion re taking it to a Linn dealer, I will google ones in central London

As its such a modular deck I can upgrade it

One (perhaps stupid) question, will it play 45rpm records?

Best Edward

Yes it it will... but with your current power supply you'll need the 45RPM pulley adaptor as the Valhalla is 33 only.

The Valhalla power supply has only one speed. To get 45rpm you would need an adapter sleeve for the motor.

A more elegant solution is to upgrade from Valhalla to Lingo which offers switchable 33/45 rpm. More musical as well. As Smokestack suggested, a dealer will be able to advise you on where your deck is at, and how you can improve it.

Or Hercules power supply for much much less and offers 33/45 at the push of a switch.

Personally I would just enjoy it playing LPs for a while before making any changes to the spec. I would get it set-up by a local Linn dealer though. If you are in North West London then I would very highly recommend a trip out to Colin at What You See and Hear along the A40/M40 in Beaconsfield. You will need to book it in and leave it with him but it will be extremely worthwhile.
