Asda Nostalgia
I very rarely go into supermarkets unless SWIMBO drags me in. Tonight I was sent to my local ASDA for some milk. Walking through the store, I was shocked to see they are selling vinyl albums. Having sold all my albums back in ‘86, and my Thorens TD160 turntable, it has been a long time since I browsed through ‘Real Albums’. They had DSOTM, War of the Worlds (the original) to name a few. It fair took me back to the time when a purchase of a piece of 12” vinyl and all that wonderful album art, was a beautiful thing. Although I love my DS and the wonderful sound it makes, I kinda wish that digital had never been invented and we all still had turntables and racks of vinyl albums in our homes.

Bill.

RE: Asda Nostalgia
They are the same kind of albums Sainsbury's has been selling for years now. Maybe when they finally merge with ASBOs the prices will also come down the 10% they claim will happen across the board!

I think that the quality of vinyl is better these days, with most new releases being pressed-on 180g vinyl.
However, it’s the quality of mastering that seems to let new releases down these days. I used to relish examining the run-out grooves of 90’s releases to find out if they had indeed been mastered by Ted Jenson at Sterling Sound, NY, or Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk.
Sad, but true... Big Grin

Most of the time the compression levels are extreme on new popular vinyl on the more “hip” artists. It’s just the same thing you get on the downloads. The producers don’t take any particular care on vinyl; it’s just another income stream but I’m glad they’re doing it as it keeps the format alive.

Nothing like reading the sleeve notes and having something physical for your choons.

Klimax LP12 (Cirkus, Tranquility, Radikal D, Keel, Urika, Khan top plate, Ekos SE, Kandid). Klimax Renew DS. KK D, Solos D. 242 mk 2 with upgraded stands. Project RCM

I agree that the mastering nowadays is often abysmal, some really sound like they were mastered for iTunes. Maybe I've had a streak of bad luck with my pressings, but I'm certainly not impressed. I doubt that most new releases are pressed on 180 g vinyl, this might hold true for reissues, but not for new releases. Maybe it also varies with the type of music you're buying...
